This is an unusual opportunity for the discriminating audiophile.  This custom pair of speakers is completely passive, meaning there is no internal crossover.  I’ve used these with both electronic crossovers and a custom made external crossover.  One or the other is required in order for the speakers to function.  Adjustability of the crossover is key.  This is what enables fine tuning in order to allow for differences in source material as well as the differences in driver output.

Each speaker comes in three independent parts.  On the bottom is a 9.5 cubic foot front ported woofer box of professionally braced (see photo) 3/4 inch thick Baltic birch plywood.  That box is encapsulated with 3/4 inch thick mahogany— not veneer, all 3/4 inch mahogany.  The shape of the box duplicates the shape of the horn and horn enclosure (see photos).  The three inch wide front inlay is bobinga.  These woofer boxes have wheels installed on the bottom to aid in speaker positioning.  The installed woofer is a 8 ohm TAD 1601c (97.5 dB SPL, freq. range 28Hz-2000Hz.

The midrange horn enclosure is also 3/4 inch mahagony.  In that enclosure is a Bruce Edgar designed, John Wolf manufactured, 250 Hz radial tractrix horn.  Connected to the horn in each speaker is a JBL 2441 driver.  The stock diaphragms have been professionally replaced by Orange County Speakers with matched 16 ohm beryllium diaphragms.

In between the woofer and horn enclosures are mahagony flats with interior mounted mahagony circular enclosures for the Fostex T500 mkII 8 ohm tweeters.  After much experimentation, this positioning of the tweeters gave the best reproduction of sound vis a vis the woofer and horn placement in the typical listening position.

As set up, each speaker is 37 inches wide, 52 inches high and 32 inches deep.  Each woofer box by itself is approximate 200 lbs, which is one of the reasons why this is a LOCAL PICK UP SALE ONLY (see below for additional info).

For those who might be interested, I would be willing to include (at a $300.00 additional charge) an excellent condition Pioneer SF700 electronic crossover in original factory box and packaging.  I’ve tried several electronic crossovers and this one is without question the best with these components.  Be advised, however, that because of the passive nature of these speakers 6 channels of amplification are required when using an electronic crossover.  I used 3 pairs of SET mono amps.  But the advantage of this kind of set up is the limitless adjustability of driver (woofer, midrange horn, tweeter) output.  What makes this important is the option to adjust for style of music, recording quality, or source material.  For example, midrange output of vinyl is often different than it is with the same recording on a CD.
Thanks for looking.  Because this is a local pick up only, my preference for payment is a certified cashier’s bank check or cash.  However, I will accept Paypal for an additional 4%. ONLY THE SPEAKERS ARE FOR SALE.  NOTHING ELSE PICTURED IS PART OF THE SALE.  AGAIN, THIS IS A PREFERRED LOCAL PICK UP ONLY.
I might be willing to consider accommodating a Craters and Freighters shipment (there is a branch here in Denver) totally coordinated and paid for by buyer.
