Technical information

With the Reference LS-4004 speaker cable, we continue the incredible story of their Air Helix technology: To achieve perfect air insulation, the new cable uses no less than 16 Cross Link Super Speed waveguides (rather than eight as with the Reference Air Helix LS 2404). Obviously, the individual conductors themselves play a key role, too. With the LS-4004, too, these are made of 24 high-purity copper wires, each with a razor-thin lacquer coating for extra insulation and braided around a PE core. This design considerably increases stability inside the waveguide by effectively preventing the formation of eddy currents. (These are caused by the very high currents transmitted on the speaker cables - actually the highest ones within the entire audio path.)

Air Helix Structure

In addition, a new clip capable of carrying the increased load of the updated design had to be constructed. This clip not only must bear the surplus weight of the conductors but also needs to ensure flexibility throughout the cable structure. Just like its smaller predecessor, the new clip suspends the helical conductor arrangement freely in the air while keeping the individual conductors at an exact distance throughout the cable. The clips are meticulously assembled by hand at the on-site at our factory in Germany and then threaded into the Cross Link Super Speed waveguide. Finally, the resulting Air Helix receives a highly protective PE network jacket.

A rock-solid construction

Between the aluminum splitter and the connectors of the LS-4004, we have implemented ultra flexible parts molded from a special elastomeric. These parts are fixed inside the splitter using a specifically designed plastic plug, thus ensuring maximum cable flexibility even in the connector region. Those molded parts extend to the connector front and enclose the inner connector components, thus emphasizing the plain yet charming appearance of the LS-4004. The aluminum splitters are screwed tightly with the first clip in the cable. In summary, this creates a visually appealing and mechanically reliable design - consistent from the connectors on the amplifier side to their counterparts on the speaker side. Using a complex technique, a custom-made machine strips the highly pure Cross Link Super Speed waveguide copper wires from their lacquer coating. Afterwards, the bare wires are bundled up and driven into the connectors. This procedure prevents the occurrence of contact resistances typical of the use of additional materials such as solder or wire end sleeves.

Applied physics

Any extra material used on a cable (e.g. PVC insulation) causes a degradation of its electrical properties - this is just applied physics. Therefore, Reference cables feature a PE network jacket implemented using complex techniques. Consequently, the cables are made of just two materials: copper and PE. The LS-4004 AIR is a perfect example of a low-inductance speaker cable: The double-layer multicore design leads to a neutralization of overlapping magnetic fields around the individual conductors. This considerably reduces cable inductance, ensuring that all frequencies are transmitted freely and without any latency. Plus a full range of connector options offers maximum flexibility.

The connectors

We have opted for tellurium copper as the plug base material rather than brass. This is because tellurium copper offers twice the conductivity. Each plug comprises a basic terminal with a spade or BFA banana adapter laterally threaded to it. This connector design provides maximum flexibility with regard to adjusting the angle between the cable and the connector and also mitigates the effects of mechanical forces acting on both the cable and the connector including their contact interfaces. The connector surfaces are rhodium-coated because this extremely robust material ensures optimum contact even after many mating cycles.

I had a very good experience with the Inakustik LS-1603 speaker cables last month and was sort of skeptical about testing the LS-4004. How could it be way better...

So I let the 4004 cables cook for 36 continuous hours before any listening. Then...

I decided to make it difficult on Inakustik and made my first comparison with the best cable I had, the Stealth Dream that I am selling for a friend. It has a very good reputation and sells for 12000$ CAD.

You know how strict my listening comparison protocol is. Same for known track and unknown. I know my worst enemy is myself and as any human, hoping reality will match expectation so beware, always beware of yourself.

So I start with very difficult track of Verdi Requiem with full orchestra choral and soloist. I listen to this 4 minute track 3 times to be sure I know it in a very comfortable margin, meaning that 4th listening time does not bring any surprises. Then and only then I switch cables. It takes less than one minute to swap out cables and when I return to my chair, I wait about one minute so my activity level settles down. Push play button....

A new recording literally. Depth, definition, dynamic, harmonic density. It is like following and understanding or adding a lot more instruments and choirs. It mean soloist can now be followed and more...understood. The other Stealth Dream cable was in comparison flat, boring and lacked information.

The difference is so striking that even on simple music like a violin duo, the gap is maintained. Both violins now have their own personality and space. Amazing!

So I kept doing this, same test same protocol with many tracks with the same conclusion. It is hard to explain but generally when listening to songs, attention is naturally focused on the singer and we follow the singer and simple awareness with accompanied instruments. With the 4004, the relationship between singer and instruments is totally different. Each is totally free to express themselves and the listener can now freely dance between whatever he or she wants to pay attention to. It also mean that you hear much more detail and I would say lot more small nuances than ever before. Indeed backup vocals now have their own space and time...

I still have not listened with analog source: Kronos Pro, Black Beauty arm, ZXT Omega Premium. I will keep you posted.

Robert, I have only used my reference 2 way monitor speakers to do these test but the electronics ( Tenor 350M 240V 130000$, Tenor line 126500$ and phono preamp 61500$) and digital source with Inakustik NF-2404 interconnects are I think able to show the total potential of these cables.

And what potential!

I am in a way surprised and disturbed because Stealth cables were so expensive but so deeply happy to be able to own the Inakustik LS-4004 speaker cables; my new reference cables. Thanks for this discovery and I call them 4004 Wonders.

Let touch base on these Inakustik LS 4004 AIR, The only thing I can say is " WOW " If you love BASS this cable will toss your Subwoofer to the window, the details, sound stage, deep deep bass and 3D imaging spot on. please note, this cable haven't break in yet just came out from the box in cold weather and plug in. I don't know how much better after 100hrs of playing time, The answer is ONLY GET BETTER!

This transparency reveals a great sense of depth and detail while maintaining a sense of ease and an overall organic sound with very accurate tone. Easy to listen for hours on end to but never soft everything just sounds right. Sold my Synergistic Research cables after listening to these my new reference IC.

Sorry for late reply, I run the system 5 days nonstop before I start listening. Now it has good 100 hours. All I can say about this cable is “wow”, I could not believe how LS404 Air does it, any music I played through my system, it come out so much alive than it had before, bass slams deep and midrange to die for. Having a good listen to few different genre of music, I can hear how fast, detail with an excellent articulation that makes your listening session is so much enjoyment.
