Still one of the best sounding speakers ever made, this mint condition pair of Apogee Scintillas has been completely restored and upgraded by Music Technology’s Bill Thalmann, one of the top certified Apogee restorers in the U.S. I rated them as a 9 simply because of age, but they are pristine.

This is a 1-ohm pair that has all new Graz ribbons, a complete replacement of the crossover capacitors (26 Auricaps per speaker), new Cardas Rhodium binding posts, new foil resistors, refinished base platforms with spikes added (can be unscrewed if not needed), and refinished grey metallic cases with clear coat.

Although they were restored in 2008, they don’t have a lot of hours on them. I was still working full time until recently and only listened to them sporadically. I am now downsizing all my gear to prepare for an eventual move to a smaller house. Only used in a smoke-free home, they have never been driven at more than low-to-moderate volume levels.

Bill Thalmann has offered to answer any questions about this restoration, provide knowledge of Scintillas and Apogees in general, discuss amplification options, and give insight into the Apogee restoration market (which he can still barely keep up with).

I would prefer if someone could pick them up in the Boston Metrowest area. They are still set up for a little while, so listening to them is possible. I am happy to discuss amplifiers that I use and options. Even though they are 1-ohm speakers, it is possible to bi-amp them with a combination of ICE-type amps for the bass ribbons, with more conventional amps for the midrange/tweeters.
