Quad Electrostatic Loudspeakers:
These original Quad
ESL’s (ESL 57’s) are all original, and have not been serviced or modified in
any way. They are like a time capsule back to the late 50’s when they
were produced. They are very early production units SN’s 1658 & 1671.
They were not powered up for much of their life as evidenced by both
power supply neon bulbs still being functional and not darkened at all.
Typically after a year or two of being powered up, the neon bulbs will
burn out. They charge up fairly quickly for original ESL’s indicating
that the panel coating is still intact and the panels are in good condition.
Shown below is a frequency response graph of the pair after 4 hours of
charging (nearly completely charged).
These speakers have
the original bronze grills with only minor dents and blemishes, however the
tops (where the grille curves over the top of the speaker) are sun-bleached.
The speakers come with the feet and side panels and replaced power cords
with appropriate bulgin plugs.
The power supplies
have the original epoxy rectifier blocks consistent with speakers of this
vintage. These blocks are still working well at this time.
This is a good, fully
working, set of un-rebuilt original Quad ESL’s (ESL-57’s).
They are located in
Eastern Vermont USA less than an hour away from Sheldon Stokes, who has been
rebuilding Quad ESL’s for over 20 years. He will pick them up from the
seller if the buyer would like them rebuilt.
Please examine the
photos closely, what you see is what you get.
These speakers are working
well at the time of the sale, but due to their age are sold as-is.
