Onkyo Integra R1 P388F  120/220V 

Very very rare Onkyo Integra premium preamp.  

Incredible build quality and component selection. 

Rare balance inputs and outputs.  Last of the great 2 channel preamps from Integra.  Weighs close to 30 lbs. 

Working perfectly with remote.  Some scratches on cover but faceplate is near perfect. 

Information comes from The Vintage Nob.org :  

Last high-end 2-channel audio development of Onkyo, launched at the same time as the Japan-only and diminutive A-1E.

The P-388 and M-588 were however also exported outside Japan and, depending on country, available until the very late 1990's.

The P-388 embodies the refinement of what was put inside the P-308 (1986) but gone were the In-Phase transformers, and most of everything else, including the myriad of switching functions.

In are two AEI "laser" transformers, one for line sources and one for phono sources, plus another outside the enclosure for utilities such as relays or motor-driven source switching and volume control.

The power-supply section sees the back transformer and two big caps delegated to feeding the L and R line sources ; the other four, two each, and the front transformer feed the MM and MC stages.

Unlike the latter, the phono MM and MC inputs each have their own terminals (and circuits) but no pF or Ohm switching...

Two balanced inputs are available (better than those in the Sony), along with three outputs - one normal and one phase inverted (both unbalanced) and a normal one in balanced format.

Two 6-step output attenuators are present with deported shafts, just like the REC Out selector. Very select component entry, 70µ PCB tracks, dual-mono structure, Neutrik terminals etc.

The main circuit is organized as in the M-588 : double-differential input, double-Servo. And it is almost all made with discrete components : no ICs in the phono stages or anywhere else but in the stepped outputs.

The P-388F  is an excellent high-end preamplifier, better than the stock TA-E80ES!

The stereo preamplifier which carries a super balance circuit. 

The double differential-amplification circuitry which combined the original double differential-amplification circuitry of Onkyo and the double super servo with the flat amplifier circuitry was adopted, it corresponded to which of any balance imbalanced inputs, and the stable operation is realized direct. 

Moreover, in order to harness the special feature of a cartridge, the optimized equalizer circuitry only for man month/MC is adopted. 

The input terminal was also considered as the special purpose, respectively, and the simple amplification made into the minimum number of contacts by eliminating a switching circuitry is realized. 

While simplifying the signal path (signal path) inside a chassis, in order to connect by the shortest distance, the direct signal flow construction is adopted. 

The object for a balance input and the switching circuitry for an imbalanced input were made to become independent, respectively, and by operation of an input selector, the signal was sent to the microprocessor and it has controlled synthetically. 

Moreover, the switching circuitry for an imbalanced input is wiring short near the input terminal by the switching circuitry for a balance input being arranging just before a master volume. 

Furthermore, in order to carry out in the shortest distance also about a product line of the Loule Bell part, he puts a master volume on the flat amplifier input unit of the center of a chassis, and is trying to operate it from the front panel through an extended shaft. 

The super shunt power supply which combined the super linear power source without the influence of a load variation and the shunt regulator is adopted as a power-source part,Full independence of the power circuit supplied to the equalizer amplifier for MC, the equalizer amplifier for man month, flat amplifier (L), and flat amplifier (R) is carried out, and it is carried. 

Thereby, an alternating-current infrastructure noise is pressed down and the influence of the circuitry on others is suppressed. 

The LASER transformer of the deformation core which reduced magnetic reluctance by making width of a perimeter part large is adopted as a power transformer. Furthermore, compared with the conventional EI core transformer, leakage flux is reduced to 1/30 with shielding severely by silicon copperplate shielding material around a core. 

Moreover, full independence of the object for flat amplifier, the object for equalizer amplifiers, and the 3LASER transformer for control circuits was carried out, they are adopted, and while suppressing the influence on the amplifier part handling a signal, the interference between each stage is eliminated. 

It has arranged so that the digital control part stored in the front panel, the power supply part which supplies a power source to each stage, and a signal path (signal path) may be tied with the shortest distance. 

Furthermore, by adopting 3LOAD-RESISTOR-BOX structures which shielded each amplifier part completely, respectively, management is carried out so that neither a digital noise nor a power-source noise may have an ill effect on each stage of an amplifier part. 

Each of volumes and input selectors has adopted the mechanical scheme driven by a motor, and a control is possible in a hand using remote control, suppressing that nonlinear distortion like a semiconductor switchpoint occurs. 

As compared with the conventional volume, the custom-made 4-unit volume by super-low-distortion carbon resistor of -40dB is adopted as a master volume, and component partses, such as a film capacitor of the German roederstein shrine which opted for adoption, are adopted, repeating an audition. 

Moreover, in a resistor, they are a high-order-accuracy large-sized carbon resistor (3/4W type) and a substrate of 70 microns of Copper-foil thickness,the XLR type 3 made from die-casting of a blance type -- P connector, gilding shaving appearance was carried out and parts, such as a pin jack, a chemicon for power sources of a super-low-impedance, and the very-thick cabtire AC code, are adopted.

This item will be professionally packaged and insured for safe transit to your home.   

If we don’t have the original manufacture's packaging, we use heavy duty double ply corrugated boxes with Instapak expanding foam custom inserts.  In many cases this has proven to be better than the original packaging.  We also use high quality fiber reinforced tape to seal our packages.  Lightweight items will be bubble wrapped and shipped in a high-quality box.

TRADE IN POLICY 

We accept trade-ins of equal or lesser value under certain conditions.  Simply ask and let us know the exact model, condition, and the accessories that are included.  Such as the original box, remote, manual, etc.  We will only consider high-end equipment from mainstream manufacturers such as McIntosh, Mark Levinson, Audio Research, Krell, etc. and will typically pass on displays, projectors, receivers, dated processors, and mid-fi equipment of any type.  We will offer a fair value for your equipment, but keep in mind we are running a business and will need to be able to resell the equipment at a profit after investing a great deal of time and resources in testing, certifying, repairing, cleaning, and packaging the incoming equipment.  If you are looking for top dollar we suggest attempting to sell it directly to an end user on your own.

We will also purchase your used or broken gear and arrange pickup if you are in our local market.  Just drop us a note for a quote but be sure to include the condition and what is included. 

HOW TO VISIT US

We are currently operating from a residence in Ridgewood, NJ.  You are welcome to make an appointment if there is a piece of equipment you would like to see in operation before or after purchase.  We have a well-equipped, dedicated listening room with tons of equipment of all makes and models.  We are not a store, so please don’t make an appointment if you are just curious as to how a speaker or piece of equipment sounds.  In essence, no tire kickers please.

If you are in NYC and cannot make it out to Ridgewood, we can arrange pickup in Union Square (14th Street) after the purchase.   You can call or text 646.852.2073 with any questions or to schedule an appointment.  We can also arrange to install, calibrate, and tune the gear in your listening room if you are local to the area.  This is super useful when purchasing large speakers or heavy amplifiers.  It is also great for ensuring your new turntable is setup correctly in its final resting place.
