I'm not new to audio (3 decade’s worth) but I'm clearly a newbie to AudioKarma and I would like to share my experience with my new McIntosh MVP871 upgraded by The Upgrade Company to their
"Signature Edition" upgrade versus my MCD-500 I bought new.

I have owned many CD players including the following models that were upgraded by David Schulte of The Upgrade Company - Denon 3910 SE then a Denon 5910 SE then an Exoteric X-01 Limited SE upgraded. 
As I moved up, I've always been very satisfied with The Upgrade Company's work and recommendations.

After buying a McIntosh C-2300 preamp and MC-252 power amp, I decided that it would be nice to have a full McIntosh system, so I bought a new MCD-500 CD/SACD Player.

I listen to all kind of music but mainly to Jazz and Blues such as Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, Keith Jarrett, Diana Krall, Doug MacLeaod, etc. 

The MCD-500 is a fine player indeed, but I was clearly missing something that really connected me with the music that I had previously enjoyed in all of the Upgrade Company players I'd owned. 

So I contacted Dave at the Upgrade Company to see what he had to say, and he mentioned that the McIntosh MVP-871 once upgraded to their "Signature Edition" is an amazing player that had held its own with some of the most expensive 2 and 3 box players made.

After many discussions with Dave and verifying The Upgrade Co's 7 day in home money back guarantee that states they will buy back the unit if I'm not satisfied, as well as reading the posts here by Viktor, I decided to buy a new McIntosh MVP-871 and send it over for The Upgrade Company's "Signature Edition" upgrade. 

The 871 sounded like a great idea to me because I wanted to have an "all McIntosh system" and because the 871 is a true Universal player so I can play my DVD-Audio and HDCD Disks which I really missed listening to. 

I received the 871 in about a week and let it play for only 48 hrs before I tested against the MCD500 because I couldn't wait any longer - you know the feeling!

Well, I'm very excited by the outcome as the MVP-871 SE easily outperforms the MCD-500 in direct side-by-side comparisons on the same cabling. 
The 871 SE has superior resolution, weight, transparency and a jet black background. All of this with increased musicality. The voices are just in front of you, you feel closer to the musicians and much easier to connect with the music.

After one week of burn-in, the SE upgraded 871 is becoming even more refined and resolute overall, and bass notes are deeper and better defined as well. Big improvements over the MCD-500.

I never thought a McIntosh Player could be upgraded and certainly not to this level of performance. Also, I prefer the sound of the 871 SE to the Esoteric X-01 Limited SE.
There is something about the McIntosh sound that is difficult to put words around - overall ease + musicality.

I'm sharing my experience here for those who perhaps would like to dramatically improve their McIntosh player without losing money selling their old CD player and then buying a new one like I did, which turned out to be nowhere near as good as the upgraded 871.   Cheers, Dan

Another Review: I'll begin this review by saying I was perfectly happy with my MVP861. I had stellar video & remarkable audio. Many on the forum have taken up my offer to visit and audition it first hand.  

Today, I decided to hard wire in the MVP871 & do some comparisons.

First, let me mention the MVP871 is built like the MCD/MDA-1000 reference components. Very heavy duty, extruded aluminum sides, and about 5" deeper than the MVP861. Most Impressive build for a DVD/Multi disc player I have ever seen.

Once properly installed & setup, which is fairly similar to the back of the MVP861 (which makes the upgrade easier) it was time to take it for a spin.

One final word before I spill, my System as most know is heavily pushed to the Max, so I reallly wasn't expecting to see or hear much improvement over my MVP861. Diminished returns, or even negative results are quite common with upgrades at this point.

OK, I first put in the Pixar DVD "The Incredibles" chapter 23 (100 mile Dash) this first scene absolutely blew me away (which is not easily done!) the Video was to die for, absolute film like 3D. So clean is the detail, that every scene had new found clarity & color depth.

The Audio section however was even more impressive & immediately audible. The same scene above had much more enveloped sound, especially the sides & rear. I felt the audio for the first time without turning up the gain. On a 1-10 scale, I feel like I am off the chart! I kid you not.

Next, I put in Pink Floyd, Dark Side of The Moon SACD "Money" guys, as good as it was, it got better; Alot Better! Once again much more involvement all around. The sound attacks you from every angle with Awesome Clarity & Dynamics. Totally intoxicating! I know this sounds like a sales pitch, but it isn't.

The MVP871 is truly on par with the MCD/MDA-1000. This Player will change plain Stereo Audiophiles to Surround and Movie Addicts. I am so impressed with this machine. I was going to use my MVP861 in another Home, but will definitely sell it now! It is a night & day difference.

I finished with the Eagles DVD in dts "Hotel California" which I know so well from all my demo's & once again, the MVP871 magically improved perfection! Kudo's to all at McIntosh that once again set a new Standard for a Multi-disc Player. The DAC's in this unit are cutting edge indeed.

This is one serious piece of Hardware; don't even give it a second thought to buy, if you're in the market for one. It delivers like nothing I have ever seen or heard!

For those that are techies, I am out-putting the MVP871 Video at 480i to my Lumagen Video Processor, then on to my G90. Since my Video cables are custom made for BNC, I did not have the opportunity to send the MVP871's 1080p direct to my projector. The Digital Audio is sent via Toslink Optical. And of course SACD, DVD-A is via 6 RCA IC's.

I give it five stars!
