The flagship of Sony ES SACD players, the single-disc SCD-XA777ES
delivers a musical experience so involving that even the subtlest
nuances of the original performance come sparkling to life in your
living room. Three of our most dedicated audiophiles auditioned this
player in their homes, and all returned with rave reviews. Whether it's
playing SACDs or standard CDs, the 'XA777ES offers the perfect union of
digital clarity and analog smoothness, musicality and warmth.

Six
multi-level Super Audio D/A converters contain two digital filters each
— a super-high-frequency DSD filter for SACD's 1-bit Direct Stream
Digital™ signal, and a separate filter optimized for standard CDs. So,
on 5.1-channel SACDs, you get one "SA DAC" per channel. And on stereo
SACDs and CDs, its exclusive Tri-Powered DAC system runs multiple SA
DACs in parallel (3 for the left channel, 3 for the right) for
revolutionary audio performance! Built-in bass management and channel
level adjustment means you can easily optimize multichannel SACD
playback to match your particular speaker system.

The
construction and design are ES quality all the way! The analog, digital,
and power supply sections are completely separated on 3 audio circuit
boards — expensive to produce, but priceless to your music. Using
asymmetrical frames and beams, its ultra-rigid chassis restricts
resonance masterfully. Two oversized R-core power transformers (one for
analog, one for digital), mounted on a copper plate, provide minimal
vibration and maximum stability. Thanks to its discrete dual-laser
pickup, the SCD-XA777ES plays your audio CD-Rs and CD-RWs, too.

In the January 2002 issue of Stereophile
magazine, reviewer Kalman Rubinson found this Sony to be a compelling
musical performer whether playing CDs or SACDs, 2-channel or
multichannel: "The XA777ES is a top-class CD player whose price might
be justified without regard to its SACD capabilities. Whether that's
due to its multiple paralleled DACs, the use of a separate laser head
for CDs, its tank-like construction, or any other attribute, is moot.
This is the first SACD or DVD-Audio player in my experience to offer no
performance concession to any dedicated CD player."

"The Sony SCD-XA777ES establishes a new standard for SACD reproduction in my experience."

Details:

  • plays multichannel SACDs, stereo SACDs, CDs, audio CD-Rs, and audio CD-RWs
  • 6 Super Audio D/A converters
  • Tri-Powered DAC system
  • frame-and-beam chassis
  • 3 audio circuit boards
  • dual-laser (1 for SACD, 1 for CD) optical pickup
  • multichannel bass management and level control
  • 5.1-channel and stereo analog outputs (for 5.1-channel SACDs, stereo SACDs, and standard CDs)
  • optical and coaxial digital outputs for CD
  • twin large R-core power transformers
  • remote control
  • SACD playback specifications:
    • frequency response 2-50,000 Hz
    • 0.0012% THD
    • 108+ dB dynamic range
  • 16-7/8"W x 5"H x 17-1/16"D

Note: Multichannel SACD playback requires 5.1-channel input on receiver or preamp.

Disc Compatibility: This unit can play the following discs:

  • Conventional audio CDs
  • Single layer 2 channel and Multi-channel Super Audio CDs: These can hold up to 74 minutes of music and are playable ONLY on an SACD compatible unit such as this
  • Dual layer 2 channel and Multi-channel Super Audio CDs: These
discs hold dual layers of high density information for longer
playing times (one side only, so the disc does not have to be
turned).  These discs are playable ONLY on an SACD compatible unit
    such as this.
  • 2 channel and Multi-channel Super Audio CD + CD (Hybrid disc):
These discs have a high density SACD layer and a CD layer, allowing
them to be played either on an SACD compatible unit OR on a regular
CD player which can read the CD layer
  • CD-R
  • CD-RW

Direct Stream Digital(DSD) Encoding: Super
Audio CDuses DSD encoding (compared to PCM used for
CD/MiniDisc/DVD/Audio DVD, etc.).DSD uses a sampling frequency 64 times
higher than conventional CD (2,822,400samples per second) and 1-bit
quantization which does not require decimation orinterpolation filters.
This achieves both a wide frequency range and a widedynamic range across
the audible frequency range, thereby providing musicalreproduction
extremely faithful to the original.

2-Channel and Multi-ChannelSACD Playback:
In addition to standard2-channel CD playback, this unit will play
2-channel and multi-channel SuperAudio CDs. During SACD playback, the
digital outputs do not operate; the analogoutputs must be connected to
listen to SACDs. There is one set of stereo RCAoutputs for standard
2-channel playback, and there is a set of 5.1-channel RCAfor
multi-channel playback. For multi-channel playback, the 5.1 channel
outputsmust be connected to a multi-channel input on a receiver or
preamp.Multi-channel SACDs may have 3, 4, 5 or 6 channels of audio. Note:
Duringmulti-channel playback, there is no output from the 2-channel RCA
outputs, andduring 2-channel playback, there is no output from the
5.1-channel RCA outputs.

Super Audio DAC System andDirect Digital Synch D/A Clock Converter: Thisunit
is built with a new Super Audio DAC system (SA DAC) and a Direct
DigitalSynch D/A clock converter for enhanced sonic performance.

Tri-Powered DACs: Becausethis
unit offers multi-channel output, it has six digital-to-analog
converters(DACs). When a two-channel disc is played, each channel is
passed through threeDACs, thus improving the signal quality and
signal-to-noise ratio.

Multi-Channel ManagementFunction (bass management):
TheMulti-channel Management Function allows you to set up the unit
according to thelayout and size of your speakers; this feature applies
to SACD playback only. For the multi-channel playback mode, speakers
designated as "Large"will be sent full-range audio, while speakers
designated as "Small"will receive signals that have been filtered to
remove low bass frequencies. Forproper channel balance during
multi-channel playback, the center, surround andsubwoofer channel output
levels may be adjusted at the unit or with the remote.

Digital Outputs:There
are both coaxial and optical digital outputs on this unit. The
digitaloutputs are active only when playing a standard CD. Because of
the quality ofthe DACs in this player, one might choose not to use the
digital outputs; inthis case they can be turned off.

Digital Filter: Whenplaying
a standard CD, the digital filter can be set to "standard" or"option."
Standard provides a wide, spatial feeling, and option offerssmooth and
powerful sound with a clear image position.

Frame and Beam Construction:Using
asymmetrical frames and beams, the ultra-rigid chassis reduces
resonanceto maintain sound quality. The analog, digital, and power
supply sections arecompletely separated on 3 audio circuit boards to
reduce any possible noise fromaffecting the audio signal.

SACD/CD Switching: Theunit
automatically determines the format of an SACD or CD disc. However,
anSACD/CD button on both the remote and the unit allows you to select
the formatin the case of a hybrid SACD/CD disc. Also, there is a
MULTI/2CH button on theunit and remote that allows you to choose between
the 2 channel andmulti-channel sections of a SACD that contains both
types of tracks.

SACD and CD TextCompatible: This
unit can displaythe disc name, artist name, and current track name (14
characters will appear atonce, after which the display will scroll) for
compatible CDs with CD Text andSACDs (most of which will have text).

20 TrackMusic Calendar: Acalendar-like display lights up with the number of tracks on the currentlyselected disc. After a track has been played, the number for that trackdisappears from the calendar display.

Display: Thedisplay
can be set to show current track/index/elapsed time,
currenttrack/remaining time, remaining time for entire disc, or Text
information. Thedisplay can also be turned off.

Program Play:Up to 32 tracks can be programmed and played in any order.

Shuffle Play:This unit can play the tracks on the disc in random order.

Repeat Play:This unit can repeat the current track or all the tracks, repeat Shuffle play, and repeat Program play.

RemoteControl

RM-SX700 Remote:The
remote is pre-programmed to operate this unit and a number of functions
onother Sony CD players. The remote's codes correspond to Sony CD
Player codes, somany of its functions can be operated with a normal Sony
receiver or preampremote control.

Inputsand Outputs

Front Panel:

  • Phones: standard gold-plated headphone output

Rear Panel:

  • 2CH Analog Out: left and right gold-plated RCA jacks. Note:
Since audio from SACD discs is output only from the analog outputs,
this set of outputs must be connected to the receiver or preamp to
    listen to 2-channel SACD discs.
  • 5.1CH Analog Out:
left front, right front, center, left surround, right surround and
subwoofer gold-plated RCA jacks for connection to a receiver or
preamp with a set of 5.1-channel inputs. Note: Since audio
from multi-channel SACD discs is output only from the 5.1CH analog
outputs, this set of outputs must be connected to the receiver or
preamp to listen to multi-channel SACD discs.
  • Optical Digital Output (CD only): one Toslink optical digital output with a plastic cover. Note:
Only 16-bit PCM digital signals from a CD, or the CD layer of a
Hybrid SACD disc, are output through the digital outputs.  SACD
signals are only output through the analog outputs. This is done both
for copy protection issues and the fact that SACD signals are not
PCM, thus they cannot be recorded by current consumer digital
    recorders.
  • Coax Digital Output (CD only): one gold-plated RCA digital output. Note:
Only 16-bit PCM digital signals from a CD, or the CD layer of a
Hybrid SACD disc, are output through the digital outputs.  SACD
signals are only output through the analog outputs. This is done both
for copy protection issues and the fact that SACD signals are not PCM
signals, thus they cannot be recorded by current consumer digital
    recorders.
