The Berkeley Audio Design Alpha USB is a USB to SPDIF/AEL converter that provides a super stable and low jitter clock from an USB source, allowing you to drive the SPDIF (or AEL) input of a DAC from a USB source. It is beneficial either to clean up the clock from a USB source, or to drive DAC's that do not have a USB input. I bought this component to drive an older DAC from a Mac Mini. The upgrade over using the optical SPDIF output of the Mini was astonishing. Very nice soundstage improvements, beyond expectation. The only thing that gave this unit a 9/10 is no factory box. It is pristine. Check out the review for more detailed information: http://www.theabsolutesound.com/articles/berkeley-audio-design-alpha-usb-interface/
