About Snowmass-

Since
the initial release of DirectStream in 2014, each of Ted’s OS Updates
have bettered its predecessor. That’s right, the peaks keep getting
higher.

So what magic did Ted unleash with this new OS? We’ll let Ted tell you:

“For
Snowmass I rewrote the FPGA code that upsampled lower rates of PCM to
352.8k (or 394k, depending). I wanted to get better control of the times
at which things happened, in order to have more control of noise
generated, and more control of the jitter generated by the FPGA. I could
also get a better balance of the FPGA resources needed to do the
filtering. In the old upsampler I got about 144dB S/N in the upsampling.
In the new code I have about 156dB S/N. Lowering noise and jitter makes
everything better.”

Ted's description may make it sound as
though Snowmass would make only a modest difference in sound quality—but
PS Audio CEO Paul McGowan found that nothing could be further from the
truth:

"Redcloud, our previous upgrade, makes huge improvements in the sound quality of DirectStream. But Snowmass is truly stunning.

"Everything
is more open and soundstage depth is better-defined. This allows your
ear to work less because the image is more palpable and the illusion is
therefore much more realistic.  In the midrange, there's more detail
with less harshness, and voices and instruments are better separated,
more precisely located in the soundstage. It's easier to hear the
enunciation and vocal technique of singers, dynamic contrasts are far
greater and crescendi just leap out at you—and everything just sounds
more 'real'.

"Snowmass is our best update yet, and as always,
DirectStream owners get this upgrade for free—and holy cow, they're not
going to believe how good this is. It easily blows away six-figure
DACs."

Now Roon ready and MQA ready to fully      decode all MQA with optional Bridge 2 addition.

The latest Snowmass software upgrades this DAC again. This unit is even better than all older DSD version DAC's.

Rated Class A+ in Stereophile
and PRODUCT of the YEAR. It was also Product of the Year in The Absolute Sound.  This is before the latest software upgrades as it is clearly better now.
In the Absolute Sound review they said:
DirectStream’s
easily the best DAC I’ve ever heard in my system, making
digitally-recorded music sound better than I’ve ever heard it.

Tone Audio just made the DSD DAC and DSMP their Digital Product of the Year and said:

"Much
as I love analog, and think streaming TIDAL is super cool, there are
times that I don’t want to be a suspension mechanic or an IT guy. That’s
when putting a shiny disc in the drawer and just pressing play is a
lovely thing. Unless you’re going to drop six figures on a dCS Vivaldi
or an Esoteric Grandioso, I can’t think of a better digital disc player
than the PS Audio DirectStream Memory Player and DAC. (Neither of these
six figure players
will play your DVD-a discs) If I had more than two thumbs to raise I
would offer them, it’s that good. The only remaining choice is whether
you want silver or black.
"

In the Stereotimes review they concluded with:

After listening to the PS Audio PerfectWave DirectStream DAC for the past few months it is my opinion that DirectStream
represents a new benchmark in audio reproduction. Notice that I didn’t
say “digital audio reproduction.” In other words, in my view the PS
Audio DirectStream is the most musically and technically capable device
of any type that I’ve ever had the pleasure to evaluate.
My
heartfelt congratulations go out to Paul McGowan, Ted Smith, and PS
Audio’s excellent design team for making DirectStream a reality for
those of us who truly love our music.
 At nearly $6,000,
DirectStream is not inexpensive, but by today’s standards for the wealth
of musical improvement it offers, I consider it a bargain.

Personally, I had to stretch my budget to buy the review sample, but
frankly after hearing the immediacy, dynamic capability, and immense
soundstage that DirectStream provides I couldn’t bear to send it back.

In the latest review from 6moons they said:
"But
what happened now was beyond our expectations. Maybe we had been lulled
into a bit of been-there-done-that reviewer fatigue but the
DirectStream’s handling of this CD became a rude wakeup call and put us
back on edge to eat crow. Damn, the performances of the various groups
and soloists were so real and at such dynamic range, it was hard to
believe that the source material was a simple 16/44.1 Redbook CD.
"

The first review was also a Rave.
Audiophilia summed up with:
"The
DS is a game changer; I think it has caused the ‘war’ between DSD and
PCM to be on hold or mute for most of us, and above all hold your horses
before buying expensive high-resolution PCM files or DSD. That alone is
a major accomplishment.
McGowan, on one of his recent daily posts,
stated in words the following as PS Audio’s core values/principles: ‘At
our core we give the middle finger to the impossible. When someone tells
me it’s impossible to make a $6K DAC sound better than a $30K DAC, or a
$700 integrated as good as a multi-thousand dollar one, that’s the
reaction I get; although I refrain from that gesture. The impossible
becomes possible when someone achieves it.’ "

"PS Audio has perhaps achieved the impossible with the DS.
Besides, one can now listen to a CD rip of War’s ‘Four Cornered Room’
without having to be high wearing bell-bottoms in order to appreciate
it. The DS gets my highest recommendation; hats off and a bow to PS Audio."

The new PS DSD DAC is maybe the best DAC made, regardless of cost.
It uses an FPGA, a field programmable gate array, which is basically a
computer on a chip. It takes CD’s, downloads, high-resolution PCM or DSD
based media  and upsamples them to twenty times DSD rate and outputs a
pure analog signal directly into your amplifier or preamplifier. DirectStream
converts any digital input format, such as PCM or DSD to a pure 20x DSD
stream and outputs near-perfect analog directly to your power amplifier
or preamplifier.

DirectStream has seven digital
inputs which include: two I2S, one TOSLINK optical connector, one
coaxial S/PDIF connector, one balanced XLR AES/EBU, one asynchronous USB
input and one optional Network Streaming Bridge slot.  DirectStream has both single ended coaxial and fully balanced XLR outputs.

The
DSD DAC was 7 years in design and originally started shipping in late
April 2014. It was easily the best DAC that we sold then and still is
today with its 5th Generation Huron software. This current version is
dramatically better than the original that was Product of the Year in
both Stereophile as well as The Absolute Sound.

If you own a
Perfect Wave DAC or DAC MK2 they are upgradable to the DSD DAC. The kit
is $2999.00. Call me to discuss this as well.
