Carver ALS Line Source Loudspeaker System

Each Amazing Line Source is an eight-foot tall, resonance-free alloy extrusion with thirteen vertical and one horizontal spatial ribbon — approximately 280 times more area than a dome tweeter — a classic example of the difference between a point source and a line source.

Bob respected the capabilities of ribbons, but struggled with their on-going problems of buzzing, lack of sensitivity and other negative factors.

Because Bob couldn’t find any existing ribbon transducer designs that fit his demanding requirements, he went directly to a factory to commission the ribbons now used in the Amazing Line Source.

Their wave guides are made of duraluminum, an extremely hard alloy of magnesium and aluminum; the actual ribbon membrane is made of Kapton and aluminum.  Internal coil windings are extremely dense to increase sensitivity.

Low mid and high bass is handled by eighteen side-firing transducers, which provide 830 cubic inches of displacement. Their gentle crossover frequency “overlaps” the ribbons up to approximately 9 kHz. This extreme overlap, together with phase delay in the crossover Control Module yields a soundstage with remarkable width and depth.

The Crossover Module connects between your power amplifier(s) and each Amazing Loudspeaker, providing controls for Bass Damping, and adjustment of Upper Midrange and High Frequencies.

Bass below 90 Hz is handled by an included SunFire XTEQ12 subwoofer.  With 12-inch, high-excursion Neodymium woofer and 12" side-fireing passive radiator, this high back EMF design does the work of several conventional subs, easily pressurizing a 3000 cubic foot room with even bass coverage throughout. High-current power to the drivers is provided by an internal 3000 WRMS power amp.

Partial review from Absolute Sound……

People who are familiar with Bob Carver’s design work over the years—which must be almost everyone—will realize that Carver doesn’t try just to make the same products as everyone else, only adding marginal improvements. Rather, he is an original thinker who reconsiders the philosophical underpinnings of every type of component he produces. The ALS is no exception. It represents the outcome of detailed investigation and deep thought about how a stereo can produce the maximum spatial effect in an actual listening room. To say that the results are remarkable and remarkably convincing would be to understate the case.

Moreover, this extraordinary speaker, the Amazing Line Source (ALS), is available at a price so low as to seem almost incredible. People are paying more than the cost of the ALS for little two-ways that offer nothing much except off-the-shelf drivers in supposedly exotic cabinets. One wonders a lot about people buying such things when for less money they could buy the ALS, with its ability to present the size and scope of music effortlessly and with ultra-low distortion. Even three-way floorstanders, however loudly they may play, are not really comparable in perceived “scope” (for lack of a better word ) in being able to sound as large music does sound.

This is not to suggest that the ALS offers only power and scale. In fact, it has a startling purity on small-scale music as well. If low distortion is one of the goals of speaker design—and, of course, it is—again, few are in the running with the ALS.

The Carver ALS is a superb speaker on its own terms, which are quite different from those to which people are accustomed. This loudspeaker is one of the most inventive and capable of all audio designers Bob Carver has ever come up with when he decided to rethink the whole idea of how a speaker ought to work in a room to achieve the closest approach to actual music, you owe it to yourself to listen to the ALS. This incredible speaker system creates a realism in reproducing music, from the solo voice up to the largest orchestral recordings. Surprisingly minimal discontinuity - the sound of real music in real space reproduced as elegantly as a live performance could ever do

Bob Carver 350 Tube Monoblock Amplifiers

Can safe, and easily drive Any Speaker Load at Any Impedance, Deliver Breathtaking Slam and Microdetail, Sound Majestic: High-Powered Performance, No-Hassle Operation

350 watts of all-tube realism, incredible frequency extension at both extremes, even-order harmonics (the magic only tubes can provide), jaw-dropping slam, and delicate microdetail – all exploding from a super-low noise floor. That's the handcrafted Bob Carver 350 monoblock amplifiers in a nutshell. The high-end industry has long known that Bob Carver is an audio genius. Yet once you hear these amplifiers, the realities of the experience become hard to grasp. You can read all about the exciting specifics below, but for now, consider: No more need for matched tubes? Tubes driving any speaker load at any impedance? A ten-year manufacturer's warranty? The point-to-point-wired and American-made Bob Carver 350 monoblocks are the answer to your tube dreams. The only tough decision involved is whether you get black or cherry red.

Equipped with six Tung-Sol KT120 output tubes, each rated for 60 watts of output (one and a half times as powerful as 6550 and KT88 types), 350 delivers extended dynamic range and abundant immediacy to any musical presentation. You'll get 350 watts (into 8 ohms) regardless of your loudspeaker's impedance. A heavy output transformer provides massive power through an increased turns ratio, with two extra interleaved windings, each bifilar wound on a core of adamantine steel with a pure nickel center section. Secondaries are wound with oxygen-free copper wire and 98% pure silver wire for the critical internal interconnections. Total bandwidth is 250kHz – or one quartet of a megahertz – ensuring absolute stability into 1-ohm speakers, including those with impossible-to-drive impedance characteristics. With 350, screen voltage is regulated on speech and music to an extraordinary one percent and the bias regulator redesigned to nearly flawlessly restore the DC component of the incoming audio signal. Nothing else comes close.
