I am finally going to attempt to sell my beautiful Yamaha CR-1020. I use to lust after these as a teenager back in the late 70s. I graduated HS in '81. The CR-1020 was made from 1977 to 1980. I think this is a later one as it has some of the accessory plugs on the back....well two. Supposedly that indicates the newer units. I have no idea if that is true.

I bought this from the original owner about 4 years ago. I paid $750.00 for the Yamaha.

I had it shipped to Music Technology of Springfield Virginia for Bill Thalmann to inspect and recap, clean and whatever else they found it needed. They are a very respected company that was suggested to my by Chris VenHaus of VH Audio.

Music Technology charged me $1000.00 for their service. They said they decided to stop charging my at $1k even though they put more hours in as it has so many little parts to replace. It was a major job. I am not sure exactly what was all replaced but as you can see there is a lot of stuff inside.

Semiconductors: 109 Transistors; 4 IC´s, 3 FET´s, 58 Diodes,
7 Zener Diodes, 5 LED´s, 4 Ceramic Filters

I also had all the lights replaced with original lights...not LED as I want the original look. All lights are working.

I had Music Technology install an IEC AC input plug on the back so that I can use different power cords without any hassle. It is done very professionally. I have the original cord.

Then I sent it to Stereo Dave's Audio Alternative in Gresham Oregon for their modifications they offer. It is basically shielding and resonance control. That was another $430.00 or so. They said everything they did could be removed and nothing was permanently altered. I personally am not very clear what exactly they did....

But I can tell you that with all the mods done by both companies, that the Yamaha actually started to sound pretty good. The top end opened up and the bottom end had more control.

I have had a lot of high end equipment. One of my problems with vintage is while it certainly looks good and has that fantastic nostalgic feel, they can and often lack in the SQ...

I did connect this to lots of different speakers, used different power amps and some fine DACs such as a Chord DAVE. I enjoyed playing with it in a not so critical or serious manner and it gets more comments than any other piece I have had...except maybe my Dartzeel NHB-108. I even used the Dart with the Yamaha as the preamp and totally enjoyed it playing through my TAD Evolution Ones. Though it was mainly paired with my vintage and modified ADS L710 with a MicroRendu playing Roon via Chord Qutest DAC. We used it in the kitchen area as our daily music box setup more than any other configuration.

The condition is exceptional. You have to put a bright light on to see anything negative. I took it outside to photograph as well as using the flash even though the flash makes things look way worse than in person. The flash definitely seems like the ugly light. There are some discolorations on the right front panel. It looks like someone got some sort of liquid splattered on the front faceplate. I am not sure what it is but it only seen with a flash...or maybe a flashlight shining directly on it. I didn't even know the blemishes on the faceplate were there until I saw them in the picture....but there they are. With this sitting in normal light in our kitchen/dinning area, it looks like a museum piece.

The wood case doesn't really have scratches. It is more like indentions or impressions in the wood. I have done zero to the wood to cover up or hide anything. It is all original. I tried very hard to get the best representation of the unit in the pictures. I am including a Dropbox link so that you can see all the pictures. I can only include 16 photos and that isn't near enough to see everything. There are 67 pictures in the DropBox link below.

I did end up having to replace the transformer as it just quit working about a year ago. The only one I found was $80 but it doesn't look that great...but works fine. It has a little bit of oxidation on the top. As you see in the picture, the interior is in fantastic condition.

Understand the this is vintage and though upgraded and modified, it is midfi from the 70s.

The original box and owner's manual are in exceptional condition.

Buyer pays shipping and PayPal fee if used.

I have put right at $2200.00 in this piece not including all the shipping back and forth across the country.

I am asking 1400.00 obo.

I don't have to sell this but I just have too much equipment and not enough space. Plus my interest is waning a bit for all the equipment lust.
