VPI HW-19 MkIII/MkIV
VPI HW-19 turntable MkIII
version up-graded to MKIV. Features Oak base, stainless-steel plate with the two-piece acrylic
top plate, motor unit from a late model MKIV, TNT platter from a MkIV and a
rebuilt-upgraded platter bearing.
Platter/spindle bearing was disassembled,
degreased, cleaned and the old flat-spotted ball bearing was removed and a new
ceramic nitride ball bearing was installed for the next 25 plus years of spinning
vinyl. The combo of the heavy VPI TNT platter and the improved bearing result
in a major decrease in the friction in the bearing. The rebuilding of the
bearing with the ceramic-nitride ball bearing is a small part that brings a
very large level of improvement to the performance of the TT.
Also included is a VPI motor
controller/power line conditioner. This small box lets you set and adjust the
actual speed of the platter to your actual home/power line conditions. Simply
plug the TT motor into the motor controller, plug the controller into your AC mains
supply (or better a power regenerator) and then set the speed of the platter
using a strobe and speed disk on the platter. The two adjustment knobs on the
motor controller are set for 33.3 and 45 RPM. This very important piece of
equipment enables your HW-19 to maintain proper pitch during playback.
The motor unit came from a
late model HW-19 MkIV that was removed from the MkIV years ago and has been
sitting in a sealed box. The original motor in the TT was starting up slow and
it was a no brainer to install the newer motor unit.
A new, uncut blank
arm-board, with brown paper still attached is included. Rather then saddle the
new owner with some old broken down cheap tone-arm I opted to let the new owner
supple their own arm or source a new good quality arm. This TT will support and
deserves a much better arm then you see on the vast majority of used HW-19s. Think high model Rega, Origin Live Encounter or
Illustrious, SME IV etc., coupled with a good quality cartridge. This rebuilt
and upgraded HW-19 with a good arm and cartridge will compete way above its
Turntable base unit shows
very well with some small marks as expected for its age. Platter and dust cover
also show very well with the expected signs of use, but no abuse. Dust cover
has no cracks and works well. Please
