Sony CDP-620es

This vintage workhorse was commonly used in radio stations
during the 1980’s. The build quality is amazing! Built like a tank. It weighs almost
19 pounds. The button matrix on the front and on the included remote control is
not a common feature on today’s CD-players but is very useful. Pressing a
button from 1 to 20 (or higher with a function key) instantly jumps to and plays
that track. No more pushing the ‘next track’ button multiple times; just hit “5”
and track five instantly plays. Hit the button a half-second too soon? Hit it
again for instant return to the beginning of the track – hence the usefulness
in a radio station.

The drawer belt was replaced about 10 years ago so the
drawer moves in and out promptly and smoothly. I’ve owned it for over 20 years
and I would keep it but I’m ripping all of my CD’s to network storage and switching
to just an audio streamer.

I recently visited a friend who has a huge listening and
equipment room and loves to A/B compare audio equipment from different decades.
Thus he has a 1980’s cd player, 1990’s cd player, 1960’s turntable, 1970’s
turntable etc. and can easily switch the same output to different combinations
of sources, amps and speakers. If you would enjoy that – get this Sony CD
player as a premier example of 1980’s CD playing technology. In many ways,
lower build quality and cramming more and more processing into smaller and
smaller cases has resulted in lower sound quality even as electronic technology
has improved.
