Soundlab MB1 - Full Range Electrostatic Speakers = Stupid Cheap Price

These speakers were custom made for me by Soundlab founder Roger West in 2001. I wanted better dynamics and range than their standard fare (M1). The MB1 was his answer - and it worked like a charm. These speakers are serial number MB01 - the first ones made. I played them on occasion for a few years and then put them in storage where they stayed for years. Recently, when I was ready to sell them, I sent them to the factory to be evaluated (where they are now). Roger recommended that we put on a new membrane and grill. And that was done at a cost of just under $2000. So now they look great and operate like new.  Also have special shipping containers which cost $500 to build. Roger has been kind enough to store them and time has come to get them out of his way.  Thus the ridiculously low price.

These speakers are being offered at less than 1/5th their replacement cost, which would be well over $20k.  Buyer pays shipping.  In the picture (at the Soundlab factory), they are the ones in front of the 9 foot tall Majestic 945's that I sold recently.  From the front, each panel looks like the 2001 obelisk - with brand new grill. They will ship from the factory.

The MB-1 is a full-range electrostatic panel consisting of a single large flat panel from which all audio frequencies radiate.  Both the front and rear of the speaker radiate freely in order to eliminate enclosure coloration.  This configuration eliminates the phase distortion resulting from using multiple drivers to cover the audio spectrum.  Further, since all frequencies radiate from the same surface, time-alignment is perfect.  The panel is flat and therefore the sonic energy is confined to a projected field having a height and width equal to that of the panel. This virtually eliminates side wall, ceiling and floor reflections, resulting in a more pure sonic field.  It is highly recommended that the wall behind the speakers be well damped in order to eliminate reflected energy from the rear of the speaker.
