With the dramatic growth in interest in reel-to-reel as a high end format and the large number of new providers of pre-recorded, 1/2 track, 15ips tapes ( Acoustic Sounds, Elusive Disc, International Phonograph, The Tape Project, Zavlnka records, etc., etc.), now is a GREAT time to explore reel-reel. Contrary to popular belief, high-quality tape playback can be had for less than what many spend on their high-end vinyl setup. A good semi-pro tape deck such as a Technics RS-1500 or Otari deck that has been properly serviced by a competent technician and wired for a direct output of its playback head, coupled with an external tape head preamp, can give you exceptional sound.  
This BottleHead preamp is one of the least expensive ways to get great tape sound.  It takes the tape head output through single-ended RCA jacks and will output either single ended via RCA or balanced outputs via XLR. NAB & CCIR/IEC EQ is switchable on the front panel along with level adjustment and balance.    
I have upgraded the input tubes with $400 worth of a pair of Telefunken EF86 plus an Amperex E188CC/7308 and they have less than 50 hours on them.

Condition is marked 7/10 due to some VERY minor blemish on the front panel that is difficult to see without very close inspection. Otherwise, the unit looks as it did when originally delivered.
