The later serial number unit comes with an original VBL power supply.  The earlier serial number unit when originally purchased came with a VBS1 power supply that had three 12v outs.  The S in VB(S) stood for switching power supply.  Bel Canto later revised to include the single output VB(L) which stands for linear power supply that was a significant improvement. The included unit was upgraded by Bel Canto from a VBS to VBL two years ago at my request.  So functionally equivalent to the unit with a VBL but has two capped ports from original VBS1.
I don't think you can find a better DAC at the same price point.
