A rather rare Hickok tester, considered to be their BEST EVER tester and "lab grade analyzer". It was made in 1965.  It is full featured tester and analyzer. It is considered far above the 539C for many reasons. In some ways it is a cross between a Triplett 3444 and an AVO TCM 163 from my point of view.

The only three transformer tester Hickok made, filament, plate, screen, plus the only true transistorized one as well. It is able to stay stable better than any Hickok we have seen. It weighs a lot, 30 pounds, so keep that in mind. It is smaller than other Hickok, at 19x15x7 inches, It will not need service for perhaps 30 years or more.

The gm meter is a high accuracy type able to measure from zero to 60,000gm in selectable ranges.  Multiple ranges for rectifiers as well.

Inter-element leakage testing not simple short testing, to 50 million ohms. Personally we will not use a power tube that shows less than 1 million, and with caution if 3 million is shown.

Built in milliamp meter for matching tubes, has been extended to not just 50 ma but a choice of 50ma or 100ma (1x or 2X) which enables it to measure much high power tubes such as Kt88/6550, etc.

Hickok testers, Even the 539C, are limited to unfiltered 150vdc for the plate and screen, which drops a lot for a power tube, to 130vdc or less.  The 580A has selectable FILTERED D.C. voltages from 6.3vdc to 300vdc for both the plate and screen independently, plus the bias, something very few testers offer.
The bias dial is for an an approximate value, the main meter actually reads the bias as a true value and is use to verify that. Range is 0 to -50vdc.
The deck has jacks for the plate, screen, and grid for those tubes which have top caps, or you can monitor those voltages with a DMM if you wish ( must be removed during the "leakage test" or a false read will show.). The tube sockets cover from 4 pin thru Acorns and compactrons.

The gas test or grid leakage test is extremely sensitive. It can detect as low as 50 milli-micro- amperes. There are 1,000 micorampheres in 1 milliamphere.

There is also a "LIFE TEST" to estimate the remaining life of the tube.

Dual element tubes tested with on button, that includes pre-amp (12xxx, 6dj8/6922/7308, 6sn7, etc., and diode tubes.
Filament: 0 to 117 vac. Also, if a tube is sensitive to filament imbalance, you can 'tune out' that interference, for a superior test  Very important for ultra sensitive tube positions such as moving coil amplifiers or triode power tubes.
Other Tubes which may not be on the roll chart are easy to figure what setting to use. Since each selector goes to a different socket pin, and voltages are also selectable,  you can customize the tester to you needs. As versatile as the 580A is, it won't test ultra high power triodes such as a 211 or 845.

The original line adjust on these gets hot, so we replaced the 25 watt with a 50 watt and installed a small power fan for ventilation. Instead of turning it off in about an hour of use, now you can leave it on all day and it stays cool.

The case shows much wear and tear. Rather that us recovering it and adding up to $250 to the price, we will leave it as is.  The deck is in outstanding condition.
This is a lot of tester/analyzer for the price, and this one is one of a kind.
