This offering is for an SME Series III tonearm in excellent working order and great condition. Last used by me on February 15, 2020.
Included are the original instruction book, mounting template, and alignment protractor along with all tools and parts needed to accomplish the tonearm setup and calibration per the SME instruction book. I have only one set 9unopened) of the original cartridge fixing screws. I always used the screws that came with a cartridge.
The original RCA audio leads are not included. Those failed years ago. You will need to provide your own RCA leads for connection to your phono input.
A substitute for the SME silicon dampening fluid is provided (10,000 cSt). This fluid matches the viscosity of the original SME fluid when thinned (as recommended). Other viscosities can be easily obtained from a hobby shop if desired.
The cartridge carrying arm is the original titanium nitride model, CA-1.
I am the second owner. I purchased this tonearm from the Shure employee's store in January, 1988. It came from the Shure phono lab test inventory. It was used for phono cartridge development and testing. Very well cared for.
This Series III version includes the outboard fluid damper and paddles. Very effective.
You can run the tonearm without the damper but its use is recommended.
The tonearm balance weight housing is currently loaded with all the weights originally included with the tonearm. This load will handle a cartridge between 8 and 13 g.
Lower weight cartridges (between 3.3 g and 7 g) can be used by replacing some of the weights with the nylon spacers. All 5 of the original nylon spacers are included.
Lower weight cartridges (0.6 - 2.7 g) can be accommodated by using additional spacers.
A 0.1 - 2.0 g cartridge can be accommodated just by leaving the weight housing empty.
The tonearm lift mechanism is in perfect working order.
An original sachet of SME cartridge seating compound is also included. SME did stop recommending its use. Very messy stuff. The sachet of the compound is likely dried out by now.
Packaging
The tonearm will be packed in the original SME styrofoam container and retail box.The retail box is a bit worse for wear but included. This will then be packed in a separate, cushioned box for shipping.
