Seasoned vinyl collectors will easily recall those early Capitol "FDS" LP's, many by William Steinberg and his Pittsburgh ensemble. With the recent release of their Command Beethoven cycle on DG, there has been something of a renaissance in appreciating just how fine their music making was. Pittsburgh was often referred to as "The world's best German Orchestra" and "the Big 5 plus 1" but the scope of their achievement can be seen in this very comprehensive box. A real eye opener is the Vaughan Williams Five Tudor Portraits, repertoire rarely associated with American music making of that time. Indeed Steinberg almost singlehandedly championed the Elgar Second Symphony in the USA. A pity he was never asked to record it. This 20 CD collection sold out very quickly and is now long out of print. I will be happy to answer your questions and please see my site, rareclassicalcds dot com for other factory sealed, OOP Classical CD treasures.
