Sonus Faber has become well known in the audio world today, but in the not too distant past Franco Serblin was personally involved in each design. The fruit of his labor produced the Concerto line. This was one of the first lines to gain traction, not just due to affordability but because it produced the Italian Sonus Faber signature sound. The Grand Piano was also their first floor-standing loudspeaker. Their passion for creating the sounds of instruments resonated into their speaker design philosophies. This gave the GP's a heart and soul.
Sonus also built speakers like fine furniture. Four sides are covered in top-grade leather. The 1" thick side-panels are finished in gloss black lacquer. Each driver is specifically designed for this cabinet. To anchor the cabinet, solid steel outriggers extend out from the cabinet sides and are fitted with steel spikes. (Not shown in the pictures, but included).
The GP's are capable of bass down to an impressive 40Hz, and not just boominess, The low frequencies hold together tight and solid which translates to highly defined musical body.
Midrange is where Sonus Faber shines. They design their speakers in a quest to perfectly match the female voice. This creates a warm and neutral speaker with passion and emotion. Yet, the soft dome is highly revealing and detailed, just not fatiguing or bright.
Overall the speakers are very nice. The drivers are excellent. One grill is perfect and the other has a few small holes, the largest is shown in a photo. Due to the black leather behind the grill, they tend to disappear. The cabinet leather is excellent for its age and one side of one speaker has a number of pins sized chips towards the bottom which have been touched up with gloss black lacquer. You actually have to feel the side to find it as its difficult to see. One top edge has a surface crack, shown in the pictures.
Overall a beautiful classic in the Sonus Faber heritage.
