For Sale is a Thiel SmartSub 1 subwoofer with a Thiel PX-05
crossover included, in black aminate, with some scratching thankfully on the side. You can put the sub against the wall. :-)

This set is specifically for Thiel products, and I used it
with a Thiel CS 3.7 (which I also have up for sale currently). It can also be
used with the CS 2.4 without modification. The combination of the speaker pair
and subwoofer produces a true full-range speaker system with low frequency
output at least down to 20 hertz.

The Thiel SmartSub and crossover was
designed to blend perfectly and transparently with Thiel speakers via a passive
“augmenting” strategy taking your amp’s main signal. The signal from the preamplifier
or power amp does not have to be separately output as low frequency only.
Rather, the power amplifier can be dual wired (bi-wired) to the CS 3.7,
a normal speaker connection, and also in parallel to the PX-05 crossover. So
you just need a second set of speaker cables to make this work – and Jim Thiel
has said they do not have to be fancy cables for the sub.

For this setup, I have had Thiel (now
Coherent Source Service) configure the crossover to have two terminals for
Thiel CS 3.7
and two others for CS 2.4. So the crossover is usable
with either speaker in your system. I think other CS 3.x and 2.x speakers may
be compatible.

In my usage, this was a terrific
enhancement that is hard to really capture in words. The Thiel 3.7 is pretty
decent at bass. But a lot of recordings actually have a lot of low energy impact
that you just miss without that last 20-30 hertz presence. Music is more
visceral, and the mid-bass sounds more lively, adding to the “sparkle” of jazz
and rock performances, and room reverb to orchestras. A nice trick so you don’t
need a 200 pound speaker! Also, the sub can compensate for using a less beefy
amp with a 3.7.
