Ypsilon VPS-100 Phono Preamplifier

Welcome to a wonderful opportunity to upgrade your system and hear music anew. One of our dear clients upgraded from this amazing VPS 100 to the spectacular VPS 100 Silver Edition. That’s a lot of superlatives you say? Well, Stereophile consistently includes the VPS 100 in their Recommended Class A+ Components and after reviewing it, Michael Fremer outright purchased his own and the VPS 100 has been a keystone in his system ever since … it’s that good!

But you probably already know that and that is why you are here checking out this listing. Perhaps you have been waiting for one to come up for sale?! Well then, today is your lucky day!

This Ypsilon VPS-100 is in excellent condition, with less than 1500 hours on it, and has the added bonus of being sold by a dealer- we are here to support you if a need arises.

Please send us a message if you have any questions and or want to upgrade other aspects of your system at the same time, we would be happy to put together a great package deal for you like we did for the original owner of this VPS-100.

Here is a variation of his system with a Ypsilon trio assisting the music in his life - below his turntable is the PST 100 MkII Preamplifier, then this VPS 100 Phono Preamp, flanked by a pair of the Aelius II amplifiers (a pair of which is available here on our website and here on Audiogon).

Some people believe that variety is the spice of life and your opportunity to purchase such a lightly used VPS 100 arises from the fact that our client was recently able to add a little spice to his system by upgrading to the Silver Edition. Are you the new owner of this VPS 100?

All the review quotes that are used in this listing are for the original VPS 100 Phono Preamplifier. However, we did ask our client, who has been in the audiophile realm for a long time and is actually a dealer for some brands himself, if he would share with us a few of his thoughts on the difference between the original and the Silver Edition. Thankfully, he was happy to write up his thoughts so that we may share them with you.....

First, he shared a little bit about the original version- "The copper version- great with very open soundstage, resolution, frequency extension (high and low), and that “sparkle” that I look for in the highs .... I would say it is just on the warm side of neutral. It’s also the quietest tube based phono stage I’ve ever heard. In fact I would rank it right up with there with some of the best solid state phono stages in that respect."

He went on to write that "With the silver version, it sounds as close to neutral as I’ve experienced. Initially, I actually thought it was leaning to the cooler side of neutral and was a bit bright but after listening to a variety of LPs, I realized it’s actually very true to the recording. If I play something bright, it sounds bright - if I play something warm, it sounds warm. If I play something with very good dynamics and fast transients, it sounds dynamic - and if I play an LP where all the leading edges have been rounded out, it sounds dull - as it should."

"In addition, the silver gives a level of resolution that goes beyond just additional detail - it’s in the way the instruments are resolved in space with a sense of clarity, density, and realism that just goes another level beyond what the copper version can do. This also permeates into the whole totality of the soundstage, spatially, and in terms of tangibility and realism. It also provides greater extension in the bass and in the highs - in fact, my analog playback has the best bass I’ve ever managed to get out of my system and out of vinyl (my TT is about the best there is with regards to bass reproduction)."

Not everyone has the means and the privilege to experience gear at this level (the Silver Edition retails at $52,000, which is twice the cost of the original VPS 100) and the changes to a system do come with their own set of challenges which our client illustrated when he shared with us that - "During my first month or so with the silver version, I really wasn’t sure if I wanted to keep it as my hearing (and brain) had to adjust to the presentation of this design. I’m glad I stuck with it though as it is clearly another level beyond the copper. That said, if you prefer a warm tilt to your LPs and some forgiveness of sub-par recordings, the silver version is not for you as it will present you with what is on the record (as conveyed by your cart) good or bad, bright or warm, dull or dynamic. It is as resolving and neutral as any phono stage I’ve heard while retaining all of the other positive attributes of the copper version."

SO, now that you have read a fellow audiophile's first hand experience with the copper and the silver versions of this amazing Phono Preamplifier, you have two opportunities to choose from - purchase this copper VPS 100 at a great price OR contact us and purchase a new Silver Edition VPS 100 - either way, we will happily welcome you to the High End Zone family and do our best to take care of your system needs and wants.

Stereophile gives us a short summary of this component with the following: “Made in Greece, the moving-magnet VPS-100 is beautifully built and housed in a substantial aluminum case. It uses a 6CA4 rectifier tube and choke filter, while RIAA is accomplished passively with zero feedback using a transformer-based LCR network. All internal wiring is done by hand, point to point.

If you desire to have a longer and more technical expose on how Ypsilon Electronics created the VPS 100, please visit their website here.

It is a joy being a Ypsilon dealer and we have shared some time with Demetris Backlavas, one of the engineers behind the magic that Ypsilon creates. This has led Michael Fremer to come up to us at the shows and request that we give his best to Demetris and multiple times, he’s leaned in to continue with “His electronics are still the best I’ve ever heard.”

We couldn’t agree more and think Demetris Backlavas is as great as his electronics are. When he speaks to us about his days of running the boards for shows at amphitheaters in Greece, his whole body lights up and you can feel his connection to music as a thriving pulse. That passion is what he uses to create the best high end electronics we have heard. It is as if his goal is to bring the experience of live music into the home and when we listen to shows, we are so thankful that he and his team found the way to engineer that passion into Ypsilon Electronics - it IS as close to actually being at a show as we've had. This has truly been a gift to us over this past year with no no live shows. Thank you Ypsilon Electronics!

Demetris is also the only CEO that we know of that personally tunes and tests each piece of equipment before it goes out the doors. One time the sound was off and he had the unit completely rebuilt – these levels of dedication to sound quality live through Ypsilon Electronics.

Going back to the VPS 100 specifically, Michael Fremer shares about this phonostage enthusiastically:

The Ypsilon "provides an intoxicating blend of stupefying extended high frequencies, resolution, clarity, and transient precision, along with tight, deep, nimble, nonmechanical bass, and an ideally rich-ie, not too rich-midrange with just the right amount of body and harmonic structure.

"I heard the high-frequency clarity, air, and extension of the best solid-state phono preamps, as well as the harmonic expression and musical flow of the best tube phono preamps, with none of the negatives of either".

And when it was declared Stereophile’s Product Of The Year, he emphasized "I haven't got over the Ypsilon and I don't expect to for some time. If ever". - Michael Fremer

From another point of view, Jeff Dorgay with AnalogAholic details his musical experience of the VPS 100 which he reviewed over a 6 month period-

... on Richard Betts’ prized Highway Call, the Ypsilon managed to take a recording that can sound slightly compressed and inject it with a dose of air. In that it beautifully separated the drums and guitars and voices from each other, the Ypsilon gave the sense of a live band playing. It provided a much closer connection to the music, allowing that critical part of the brain to turn off and just enjoy the sound."

Moreover, the size of the soundstage can become almost hallucinatory. For all its transparency, which is as good as I’ve ever heard, the Ypsilon doesn’t thin out the sound at all. On the contrary, drum whacks come through with awe-inspiring heft. So do double basses on orchestral recordings, like Stravinsky’s Firebird conducted by Antal Dorati on a legendary Mercury pressing. The union of extreme detail, coupled with massive presence, really has to be heard."

“Again, the most impressive aspect of the Ypsilon is the effortlessness of its presentation. The moment the tonearm is lowered onto the record, the concept of listening to a music system disappears from your consciousness, allowing you to enjoy music reproduced without limitation. And that’s truly what high-end audio is all about.” —Jeff Dorgay with AnalogAholic and Tone Magazine

The VPS 100 needs a Step Up transformer when used with a Low Output Moving Coil Cartridge. Ypsilon offers three differently wound Step Ups to suit your needs- in both small and large versions. The small version is mostly suited for owners of more basic phono preamplifiers and available for $3,300 but all (that we know) who have a VPS 100, use the large Step Ups which retail for $6,600. If you have a moving coil cartridge, and you purchase this Ypsilon VPS 100 we will extend to you a special discount to purchase the right Step Up for your system.

For optimum performance the MC transformers are to be used within a specific range of cartridge output levels so please do reach out to us if you would like to discuss what Step Up your system needs. You can read more about them here and this is an example of the Ypsilon Step Up Transformer L series, all of which come cloth wrapped in a nice wooden case.

This VPS 100 has been lightly used (less than 1500 hours) in an audiophile's pet free and smoke free home. It is in excellent condition while having a couple of scratches on the top edge of the back panel. I have done my best to provide you with an overall view of the back panel,

The area on the back top edge where there are a few scratches

As well as a close up of the scratches. As you can tell, these are barely noticeable at standing distance and definitely not noticeable from a listening distance since they are on the back panel!

The Ypsilon VPS 100 comes in a custom made flight case, with an original manual and a blue slip cover as seen below.

We have shared a lot about this Ypsilon VPS 100 Phono Preamplifier, thank you for reading. Hopefully, we have given you enough information to make the choice as to whether or not you would like to make this your own and bring the magic of Ypsilon to your system, bringing you closer to the music of your life.

Please feel free to call us at 575.535.2280 or email us if you have any questions and or would like to discuss how this could integrate into your system. And if you need or want to upgrade any of your Amplifiers, cables, speakers or other items in your system to the current spec at the same time, we'll be happy to assist you with a package deal for everything that you need. Thank you.

See below this next section for shipping and fine print detail, which includes points such as- if you choose to pay via PayPal, please consider the fee which is 3% when making your offer. We are also able to receive funds by Bank Wire and would be happy to help you arrange that. Thank you.

In the following section, we share with you more about the High End Zone, through the lens of our two award winning rooms at the LA Audio Show. Our 2 Channel room featured the Perfect8 Point loudspeakers, paired with the following Ypsilon Electronics: PST 100 MkII, DAC 100 and the Aelius II Amplifiers. We played music from the Aurender W20 and A10.

These next two links are video links of AV Showroom's coverage of our 2 Channel room which we are very honored and grateful to say was awarded a Gold Show Award as well as Best Sound of Show from Part Time Audiophile. The pairing of Perfect8 speakers and Ypsilon Electronics helped make the act of listening to music in this room very transportive, and honestly-- I had a hard time paying attention to our guests because the music kept drawing me in.

Jason Victor Serinus from Stereophile said the following in his review:

"Especially impressive was a 24/96 track of mezzo Jamie Barton singing Sibelius, where the system conveyed the huge expanse and changing dynamics of her stunning voice better than any other system I've encountered. When Barton opened her one-in-a-million, Golden Age voice to full capacity, you could literally hear it expand in the room. Wonderful." .... "It is no wonder that two of the Ypsilon products have received Class A ratings in Stereophile's recommended components."

Rafe Arnott (who was, at the time, the Editor and Creative Director for "Part-Time Audiophile" and is now the Managing Editor for 2 of Stereophile’s major properties, "Audiostream" and "Inner Fidelity") also spent some time in our room and awarded our room with an all of show award, and had the following to say in his show report:

"I’m going to start with the Best Sound which goes to a new combination of manufacturers for me (Perfect8 Technologies, Ypsilon Electronics, Aurender), which were curated by bricks-and-mortar shop owner Stefan Fuegi of The High End Zone out of Gila, New Mexico. My initial show report on this room is here, and as I wrote, this combination had soulful musicality, an ability to handle huge dynamic swings with ease, and aurally convinced with its impression of limitless headroom to the scale, depth, and impact of the sound."

Mr. Harley from The Absolute Sound, one of the most respected reviewers from one of the top publications to be sure, seemed to greatly enjoy his Ypsilon experience in the Aaudio room at the LA Audio Show 2017. In his review, he mentioned only a very small number of rooms and so being mentioned at all was an honor, certainly to have such high praise was. We already sold 4 pieces of Ypsilon in the weeks following the show, in part I believe thanks to these comments:

"Ypsilon:Aaudio Imports demonstrated a superb system of Ypsilon Electronics from Greece. The PST 100 Mk.II tube preamp ($37,000) drove a pair of Aelius II monoblocks ($39,000), fronted by Ypsilon's VPS-100 tube phonostage ($26,000) and MC26L step-up transformer ($6200). I had never looked at the Ypsilon components up-close, but they are extraordinarily built. The whole package sounded superb driving the remarkable new Wilson Benesch Resolution loudspeaker." ~Mr. Harley

Feel free to visit our website where you may listen to and watch videos of our LA Audio Show's award winning rooms, as well as other video related to Ypsilon Electronics. High End Zone and Starke Sound collaborated with an amazing team of more than 25 people from over 10 companies including Trinnov, JVC, Kaleidescape and many of the world's best AV firms to create a 27 channel Atmos home theater system that seemed to be a well received surprise for the audiophiles at the LAAS. Normally if there is a home theater demo at all at these shows, it is in some little back room and isn't very good. Not this time, we were right next to the registration desk in the largest room of the show and we rocked- hitting peaks of over 105 dB on our demos including Pacific Rim, Unbroken, Roger Waters: The Wall and several more. We had a lot of people come through, and as far as I could tell all of them had a good time.

The Gateway Ballroom exhibit won an Alfie award for the Starke Sound IW-H5 Elite wall mounted speakers which we were using eight of to form the base level surround channels. These speakers have won several awards at CEDIA and other events since LAAS and they rightfully deserve their place as an ultimate level home theater speaker! Three IC-H5 Elite Starke Sound speakers accompanied the IW-H5s as the LCRs and eight IW-H3 Be speakers were ceiling mounted. The room's bass was so thumping that some guests asked if we had put drivers under the chairs! This was accomplished through the use of six Starke Sound SUB36 subs and two almost refrigerator sized Rythmik subwoofers to fill the 50' X 50' room with 12' high ceilings with bass. The system was powered by Starke's A7 MK II amps, fed by the Trinnov Altitude 32 processor, with content from Kaleidescape's 4K Strato movie player. To help transform a hotel ballroom into a theater, we used Acoustic Sciences Corporation's TubeTraps, which also won an Alfie award, and Haikoustics panels on the walls and suspended from the trusses. The visuals in this room were handled with the help of Metra 4k HDMI cables feeding the JVC flagship projector the DLA-RS4500, projecting on a Seymour-Screen Excellence RF 160HD Enlightor 4K acoustically transparent screen measuring 160"x90". The visuals were as impressive as the 3D world created around you by the 11.8.8 Atmos system. I did the overall design of the room and specified most of the components. Curt Hoyt who is one of the owners of Trinnov who also consults with us, specifies speaker placement and does room calibrations. He knows more about 3D audio than anyone I know specified the precise speaker angles and did the calibration.

Peter Breuninger from AVShowrooms said "This is the finest theater system I have ever heard" and made a video with me and Curt talking about 3D sound. Designing for Atmos is vastly, vastly harder than designing 5.1 or 7.1 systems. The placements that worked for surround speakers in 5.1 and 7.1 do not work in Atmos. The performance you can get from an Atmos system is absolutely incredible. It is so stunning. Atmos, DTS:X and Auro 3D give movie makers a whole new language to work in. I can say that we screened a bunch of movies both with the Atmos sound turned on and without it before doing this show and that Atmos is a must have technology. It is the first new "must have" for home theater since the Blu Ray disc came out. But the complexity of designing the Atmos home theater makes it essential to have professional help if you want the best results for your money. We're here and available to you and Curt works with us on many of our projects so you can have us and you can have him, please get in touch if you'd like to know more about an immersive system. Here is the video which gives you some idea of what we do.

"The immersive soundfield was exceptional, and the sound was very clean, clear, and powerful throughout the audio range... As far as I can tell, the first LA Audio Show was a big success. I was glad to see one room dedicated to immersive sound, and I hope that home theater becomes an ever-increasing presence at LAAS and other audiophile confabs in the future. For this year, The High End Zone put on quite a show, and I commend the efforts of all involved!"- Scott Wilkinson, show review for AVSforum.

We put the "Make an Offer" option on all of our listings rather than a &"Buy it Now" button. Partly this is because we had a few rude people hit "Buy it Now" then they never got in touch or paid and it just wasted our time. Also, we really enjoy talking with our customers and we want to know that they really want the items we are selling. So what we do now is just the make offer button. We still hope and expect that this item will sell for the asking price and most likely we will not accept anything much below the asking price for a while.

The exception would be if someone proposes a package deal for multiple items. Obviously that gives us more flexibility to work with you. Of course we are honored to receive any offer and we encourage you to submit one, all will be duly considered. But if you truly want this item please think about the fact that if you submit an offer below the asking price it is entirely possible someone else submits a higher offer and the item sells before we see your message or respond, even though we strive to reply quickly.

In my experience as both a buyer and seller of this type of gear for almost 30 years making that full price offer might very well produce a more satisfying result than trying to save a couple of bucks on something special and hard to find. Yeah, it's exciting to save that extra dough, I know that for sure! But what a bummer to miss out on the deal you want by just a small amount too. So totally up to you, we try to make everyone happy though we realize it is impossible when 3 people all want the same item at the same price and the same time. We do our best.

And of course even if you do make that full price offer, we can still try to stoke you with an extra discount on other items you may need. Maybe you want to pick up a brand new Aurender music server. Maybe you want to get more cables. Maybe you need a beautiful Wilson Benesch or Tandem Statement audio rack, or you want to look at one of the many beautiful lines of speakers we sell such as Perfect8, Totem, Starke Sound, Wilson Benesch, ELAC or many others. The possibilities are endless. There are tons of buyers who have made that full price offer to grab the consignment items they want quickly then asked me for a deal on some new stuff they wanted to special order and I've been happy to give it to them! Please give us the chance to earn your business too.

For payment, we are happy to accept a cashier's check, a bank wire or PayPal. If PayPal is your preferred payment method then please add 3% of your purchase and shipping price to your offer to cover the PayPal fees.

We are truly appreciative of responsible Audiogon members, please make sure you are one of them before you make us an offer. If you have questions concerning the gear, the terms of sale, or if you need to upgrade any of your cables, amplifiers or other items in your system, please contact us through email or by phone at 575.535.2280. We will be happy to get back with you as quickly as possible.

Thank you for your interest and may our gear help facilitate your ears meeting high quality sound with ease.

We accept payment by PayPal and wire transfers from anywhere in the world and cashier's checks drawn on US banks. We will also accept escrow if the buyer pays the fee.

If PayPal is your preferred payment method, then please add the following percentage of your purchase and shipping price to your total to cover the PayPal fees: 3% for domestic buyers and 4% for International buyers. If you pay by PayPal then your purchase must be shipped to the PayPal shipping address only, per PayPal's rules.

We may accept a personal check from long-standing Audiogon members, but it does delay shipping for clearance. Please ask before paying that way. If you desire to pay by some other means you do not see here then please email us, we will try to accommodate you if we can.

Our items are guaranteed to work properly and be in the condition we describe. If we make a mistake, if an item does not work properly, or if the item description is inaccurate, we'll offer you a full and prompt refund or exchange at our option and issue return shipping labels at our expense.

Please check your purchases promptly upon arrival. Our policy is that any flaw, damage, missing item, incorrect item, etc. must be reported to High End Zone by email no later than 3 days (72 hours) after that item is delivered. If you are not able to check the item yourself in that time frame, please make the necessary arrangements to have someone else make such a check for you in your absence.

All sales are final with no returns or exchanges allowed unless the buyer finds a defect and reports it to High End Zone within 72 hours after delivery. In the case of items that are shipped internationally, we require that any item be picked up from Customs within 5 business days or less in order to preserve the buyer's protections for shipping damage and defective merchandise under our selling policies. If the buyer finds a defect and reports it to High End Zone by email within 72 hours after the item is delivered then High End Zone will repair, replace, or refund at our option.

So while all sales are final and there are no refunds or exchanges unless you receive a defective item and report that within 3 days as specified above, IF for some reason we do agree to accept your return or cancel your order when there is no mistake or defect on High End Zone's part, then you agree to pay us the 20% restocking fee on your order.

That said, please don't buy if you're not sure that you want the item you are buying. If you need to check with your wife, your broker, your business partner, your kids, or the Supreme Court before you buy, please do that. The High End Zone cannot be held responsible for any case of wives beating their husbands for spending too much money on good gear! The High End Zone is a full service home theater dealer located in Southwest New Mexico. While we are well established as the premier dealer in our small town market, we also serve many clients who have multiple homes or live in far-flung places. The world is increasingly a small place and I delight in talking with and serving clients from all continents and many countries of the world. Depending on your needs we are happy to just sell you gear (note some manufacturers may prohibit us from sending gear to certain places) or we can provide a full service experience including system design, acoustic design and construction, installation, programming, and more. We've done work for very high profile clients with multiple homes and we are also proud to serve many hobbyists who enjoy this hobby on a modest budget. No matter your budget, we'll strive to provide the products you want at a price that is fair with top shelf service.

Doing these lists is always very hard because we are in process of discussion with some more very cool brands I'd love to list but haven't had time to get everything nailed down yet. And on the other hand there are some lines I left off because we just haven't had much call for them lately. But who knows, maybe tomorrow the phone starts ringing off the hook for one of those, I would certainly welcome it. So please don't be dismayed if you don't see one of the products you really want here. It's not set in stone and I bet we can get it for you and that we'd be happy to do so as long it is a quality component that we would be proud to sell. One of the advantages working with a family shop like ours is that we are flexible and will work hard to get you a system that suits you. Please give us a chance at earning your business.
Our clients certainly enjoy their home audio and video rooms. We do as well and hope you'll also take pleasure and be inspired by the variety of these beautiful installations.

Some aspects of making an informed choice in an audiophile grade listening room or a home theater system are worth a little extra effort. We invite you to contact the High End Zone for help in making your choices, we will make the extra effort worthwhile.
