Steve McCormack is known as a pioneer in the field of high end electronics. He created a number of amplifiers and preamplifiers that were very well received under the banner of McCormack Audio which he sold to Conrad Johnson in 1998 which formed McCormack Audio Corporation of Virginia. Since that time he has devoted unceasing effort in exploring the sonic attributes of each and every part and material that he might use in upgrading his designs. That effort is still going forward full steam today. Fans of Steve’s know that his upgrades of older McCormack Audio gear deliver serious bang for the buck. Along the way he established SMc Audio releasing the world class VRE-1C preamplifier, which broke new ground in solid state design. 5 years ago, my customer asked what would the maximum SMc Audio amplifier upgrade look like. These amps are the result of that endeavor. They began life as a pair of original DNA 0.5 amplifiers that were stripped all the way back to the bare chassis which was then copper and then silver plated followed by an outer powder coated layer. Salient features include:
- 400 watts into 8 ohms, doubles at 4 ohms
- Plitron low noise power transformer
- Fully differential, true balanced design, input to output
- new circuit boards
- latest and best capacitors, resistors and diodes employed
- Furutech and WBT connectors
- New custom front and rear panels
- extensive use of pure silver wiring
- pure silver wound Lundahl input transformers
- Audio Magic Fuses
These amplifiers are a current model today with only a couple of available upgrades. This is a timeless classic design. The only reason it is for sale is that the customer engaged Steve to take things to new heights with a pair of amplifiers 2+ times as costly which have now been delivered.
A grading of 7 has been chosen as there is a very slight ding on the corner of a front panel. They are in otherwise excellent shape.
