Denon AVR-5800 with upgrade installed
Highly rated, excellent condition, a brute of an AV receiver.
Michael Fremer reviewed a later version of this AVR, the 5803 and said “This is one home-theater receiver that should satisfy the sonic needs of all but the most picky video- and audiophiles, and even they would probably concede that the AVR-5803 comes remarkably close to delivering what all but the very top-end separates do.” (Google "Michael Fremer Denon AVR-5803 Sound & Vision") The amplifier and tuner sections of the 5800 and 5803 are the same as far as I know.
As you likely know, he is a well-recognized audiophile and a primary reviewer for Stereophile, He also reviewed the AVR-5800, but the version without the upgrade mine includes. (Google "Michael Fremer Denon AVR-5800 Sound & Vision")
The details of the upgrade I added are shown in the summary sheet that is one of the photos. For most people the main benefits of the upgraded 5800 are better DACs and added decoding options for movies.
For two-channel stereo, I used optical input from my audio sources; RCA jacks are also available. Driving 2 speakers, it is capable of 200 watts per channel, and more important, the sound quality is excellent. This relates to my use of the word “brute” in describing this AVR - it weighs 62 pounds.
For video, I used component video cables, again with an optical cable for audio. There is no HDMI input or output on this unit.
The features include Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital EX, Dolby Pro Logic II, Dolby Headphone, DTS 5.1, DTS 96/24 5.1, DTS NEO:6, and THX Ultra2 Cinema and Music. Several of these have options for using all 7 amplifier channels (170 watts each).
The unit will be shipped with the tuner input enabled, so that you can connect speakers and verify operation. To complete setup you will need to attach a TV or other device that can input a video signal, because that is where setup details and choices are shown. Setup is complicated, as you will see from the comments in the linked reviews. The original manuals will be included; you can view copies at sites such as manualslib.
The included remote control is used for setup, but many universal remotes, such as those from Logitech, work with this receiver. I do not include the charger stand for this remote, having changed it to using 4 standard AA batteries.
This is a top-of-the-line AVR from Denon. Great for listening to music or for handling movie sound. It will be shipped in the original manufacturer's box.
