Selling $2500 Cary Audio MS-1 music server turned into Roon Nucleus.
- nice audiophile box
- brand new
- works like any Roon Nucleus
- CD ripping feature
- over $1000 cheaper
The original Cary Audio MS-1 music server has been upgraded with ALL new hardware and has the latest Roon ROCK software installed. This is the very same software that Roon Nucleus comes installed with - so it works just like any Roon Nucleus

Unlike Nucelus though - it has a CD Ripper built in, so you can easily rip your CDs as well!

The server is completely silent - there are no moving parts inside (no fan and an SSD drive).

All the hardware inside is brand new. This makes it basicly a brand new unit, as the only part carried over from Cary MS-1 server is the metal case. The original motherboard has been replaced with the latest board running modern Intel 9th gen. Quad-Core processor, RAM was replaced with 8GB DDR4 memory and original 3.5" HDD was replaced with a ultrafast 250GB M.2 NVMe SSD drive (Samsung 970 EVO Plus). The CPU is powerful enough for DSD upsampling or DSD to PCM downsampling - it has similar computing power to the regular Roon Nucleus and makes for a great overall user experience.
Since the SSD drive is of latest ultrafast NVMe type, the serwer works much snappier than similar servers from Innuos, 432 EVO or Beatis that rely on the obsolete 2.5" SSD drives (the NVMe is basicly 8x faster).
Thanks to 8GB RAM and 250GB SSD drive, the server can havdle even the biggest libraries with ease.

The DC is standard 12V (not 19V like in the Nucleus), so further upgrades to the PSU are much easier, as there are many more quality 12V PSUs available on the market than there are 19V ones. Universal 90-240V PSU is provided.

Like the Nucleus, the server can be fitted with the additional (second) SSD 2.5" drive for internal storage. Depending on the desired SSD drive size, please add:

  • 1TB Samsung SSD > +$120
  • 2TB Samsung SSD > +$190
  • 4TB Samsung SSD > +$360
  • 8TB Samsung SSD > +$720

I'm installing those at drive cost - Roon charges an eye-watering $400 to have 2TB drive fitted ($600 for 4TB).

As is, the unit comes with a second 120GB (0.12TB) SSD drive already installed as a starter pack of sorts. The second drive is required for the CD-Ripper to work (120GB it is good for 350+ ripped CDs) - they can be later moved over to a NAS or an external USB drive, depending where you store your music. Plus, if the buyer decides to add a bigger SSD drive for storage later himself, it is much easier to just swap the 120GB drive for a bigger one, than to figure out how to put a second SSD and connect all cables when there is no drive present. So a win-win situation for everyone and I had the 120GB SSD drive lying around.
