TOSL/2.0 board was upgraded by Bryston. Needs latest software update. It doesn't have the 4K board but why running a video signal thru an audio processor?
Sent to the Upgrade Company for a $2,000 "Upgrade" in October 2012
All I know is that all the capacitors were replaced with Black Gate made by Rubycon corp which are expensive and the chassis was RF insulated.
There are many negative comments on the Upgrade company and I don't see the guy around anymore but my experience has been positive. The unit was back in two weeks and after a long break in period required by the Black Gate it actually sounded better than stock and it always worked flawlessly.
Also the capacitors, the weak link as far as longevity in an audio gear, in this one being Black Gate, renown for being just about indestructible, won’t be a reason of concern.
If Atmos isn’t a must have but you want an an audiophile grade processor with the best undisputed 2CH built in a multichannel pre -processor (Bryston transplanted in the SP-3 their highly regarded BP-26) then you found it.
If Bryston has been able able to sell for a decade the SP-3 for a whopping $10,000 is because it's sonic performance is so superior than the competition that audiophiles still want to buy the best sounding one, regardless of some limitations in decoding the latest format.
Besides the usual digital inputs the SP3 has another unique high-end feature: A dual balanced AES XLR digital input which is the one offering the highest quality in digital connections and found only in the most sophisticated transport and digital streamer.
This offers a lot of flexibility to work with high-end digital sources other than HDMI.
The DAC of the SP3 is very good, the 2CH pre is the best you can find in a processor, the AES input is the best in quality and even nowadays hardly found in processors but certainly found in top transport and streamer.
Forget about Atmos for a second, this is a super solid Swiss knife that can cover many functions very well.
I'm selling it with all my audio system but this one is a piece that I will really miss.
I see comp sales stable on $5,000/5,500.
I'm offering it at $3,800 but no offers.
