This final beta amp led to the current Production SET Reference. 20 wpc, SET OTL, class A stereo amplifier. It comprises the main amplifier connected to a second chassis labeled 'inductive load' which contains two 45-pound Ypsilon-manufactured bespoke copper wire wound chokes.
This 'one-of-one' two box stereo amp is connected by silver umbilical cables manufactured to specification by Dave Kleinbeck of Enklein cables.
The main chassis weighs 40 pounds and features an SMc (Steve Mc Cormack) designed 18 mm milled Tankwood 'Gravity Base' terminated into Stillpoints stainless steel Ultra bases that accept any 1/4 - 20 threaded foot. The second chassis weighs 121 pounds and contains two Ypsilon manufactured chokes and an SMc 20 pound copper 'Gravity Base' also terminated into Stillpoints stainless steel Ultra bases that accept any 1/4 - 20 threaded foot.
The amplifier auto biases to the 211 or 845 tube and is plug-n-play globally utilizing 'power factor correction and David Berning's ZOTL digital switch mode power supply.
Where the seminal Berning Siegfried stereo SET amp ushered in an entirely new kind of SET amp -- an OTL -- this amplifier is twice as powerful utilizing 211 or 845 tubes with total linearity. It is sonically on an entirely higher plane. It can drive difficult loads with its low output impedance and relatively high current for a tube design.
There is no current frame of reference for the sonic performance of this amplifier. All other conventional SET amplifiers have weaknesses at the frequency extremes.
This amplifier solves the SET conundrum. And in fact, the frequency extremes are the glory of the amplifier. It also has the dense atmospheric and linear midrange of the very best conventional SET amplifiers combined with an ethereal top end and extremely good bass response. Not just good for a tube amp -- it is fast and pitch-defined -- period.
I invite direct comparisons with any other tube amplifier extant in the same power range.
Please note: the current production version of this amplifier, the SET 4-box Reference is only made as mono-blocks at $140,000 with Ypsilon copper wire wound chokes and $215,000 with Ypsilon silver wire wound chokes. Client deliveries began June 2022. This is the reason I am now selling our beta.
This reference caliber SET OTL amplifier represents a one-time lowest-cost entry into current Berning SET OTL sonic mastery.
