From Misho:
Wooden Pre (preamp) and Wooden Amp (power amp).
C3M Line Preamp Classic EL12 SE Stereo Amp
Both are the hearts of my Wooden Amp project.
Developed completely by me, including every part of it - audio and power transformers. There are a lot of transformers - only transformer loaded and transformer coupled stages.
As simply as possible - that requires maximum attention to every part.
So, all the audio transformers - interstage and output, designed and hand made by me. I'm outsourcing making of power transformers to my friends, small but very great quality company, making transformers for Siemens and Mitsubishi industrial project. My design, they are only making it. Under my strict control.
Took years of experimenting with the different designs of the audio transformers to make a final prototypes - the ones that made me happy. Perfect sound and perfect measurements (some time it can be only one way - and I do not like it).
The wooden chassis is another know-how. I was a first and most likely still be an only one who made completely wooden 3d chassis - there is no empty space inside, each layer designed to accommodate needed parts, and when glued it become a "solid plywood" how I'm calling it.
It helps a lot with the resulting sound - since we are dealing with the vibrations and resonances as well.
Another benefit - no metal chassis, no parasitic ground, no ground loops - no ground problem. No hum at all :)
The only thing - do not install the wooden amp close to a power transformers of other devices, especially badly designed.
Strong electromagnetic field is no good for any audio device, not only for the Wooden Amps :)
The pre amp - has three inputs, and two pairs of outputs (many people had asked for it, so now I'm making it as a standard).
One stage, build around fantastic C3m tube, in triode mode, with output transformer. The amplification is not big - only 6 dB, which is more than enough for any modern source, I hate the idea of wasting amplification - and killing the signal in a deep attenuation than. Preamp has a low output impedance and high driving capability.
The power amp is a two-stage amp, I was working on it for almost two decades now - finally making what I really live and I had stopped any further developments - it's perfect now. Ef86 in triode mode, loaded with the very special interstage transformer, coupled to el12 in triode mode, loaded with the very special output transformer. That’s basically it.
All this is just a detail that has not much meaning. You must listen to it to fully appreciate my work. I know no one who was disappointed or not happy with my amps. However, it's for sure not for everyone - you need to understand "flea power" conception, have an appropriate speaker and appreciate the sound of SE transformer coupled amps - so it cannot be a beginning of the search but most likely can be the end of it :)
Best regards,
Misho
