| The Placette Remote Volume Control takes a unique approach to eliminate distortion in a hi end stereo consisting of an amp, preamp and other components. Specifically, a reviewer of the Remote Volume Controller for Stereophile substituted the Placette in the place of the traditional preamp remote controls that have distortion and channel to channel imbalances that might degrade frequency response. He states the Placette solution is to use switched discrete Vishay foil resistors in its volume control. In testing the Placette with a CD player, the reviewer found that the sonic picture become centered with respect to his speakers and secondly the Placette improved his system's transparency by removing a layer of grunge which the reviewer in most cases had not even realized was there. Tonal purity was improved as well with instruments and voices sounding more relaxed and natural. Third, the sonic picture snapped into focus with the Placette. The reviewer did note practical limitations having only a single input and requiring short cable runs, but concluded the Placette's "sonic performance, however, is something that I don't want to live without." The specifications noted by Stereophile are as follows: "Description: Remote-controlled, 125 step passive volume control. Input impedance: 9k ohms. Dimensions: 7.25" width; by 1.5" high by 9.5" in depth. Weight is 4 lbs." The weight for shipping purposes including the remote control, the charger and the box with padding is 6 lbs and the dimensions of the box for shipping are 9" by 10" by 12". The seller purchased the Placette volume control from Placette Audio to serve as a volume control for seller's tube preamplifier which did not have a remote control. While it adequately served this purpose, the seller no longer has the tube preamplifier and thus has no further need for the Placette volume control.
