Metzger Vintage Audio is proud to offer this Marantz Model 7c preamplifier. This is serial number 11876 and is in immaculate condition both cosmetically and internally.

History & Provenance:

This Model 7c was purchased by the original (and only) owner in the early 1970s. He placed it in an equipment cabinet where it remained for the last ~53 years, keeping it protected from any major dust, dirt, or movement. We have been working with his daughter on the sale, and she was telling us this was "dad's special piece" and nobody except him touched it. This is why the faceplate and chassis are in absolutely immaculate condition. He also kept the original service manual, owners manual, and Marantz pamphlet catalog which are all included in the sale.

Also included in this sale is a BRAND NEW wood cabinet we had built specifically for this sale. This cabinet was made to the same size and specifications of the original Marantz 7c cabinet and is finished with a real walnut veneer.

Repair Work:

Because this preamp had been untouched since the '70s our repair tech did need to do a fair amount of work on the inside, but it's all the kind of work any tube preamplifier from the 1960s typically needs. This includes:

  • Replace all capacitors except treble and bass cluster capacitors. The reason we do not replace those is it can potentially affect the "signature sound" of the Model 7.
  • Reflow solder on many bad/cold solder joints throughout the unit
  • Thorough internal cleaning including all switches, knobs, wafer switches, and RCA jacks
  • Install new power cord (original cord was dry rotted and unsafe)
  • All 12AX7 tubes were tested and were well within spec. No need to change at this time.
Installed tubes are (6) vintage Raytheon yellow label square getters and (2) vintage Tung Sol black plate halo getters.

Shipping:

If you purchase through AudioGon please note that you are purchasing the Model 7c ONLY. After the purchase we will contact you to get your address for shipping. We work with a boxing/packing company that will expertly package the Model 7c with foam boards, cling film, peanuts, etc. and will be double boxed for safety. You are responsible for all packing/boxing/shipping fees and those fees must be paid before we ship the preamp. Alternatively, you are welcome to setup a courier service like UShip or pickup yourself at the shop.
