Thoress Full Function Amplifier

If you're reading this, you're no doubt familiar with Thöress' no-nonsense approach to hi-fi.  This full-function preamp is no exception.  The link to product details and the owners' manual is here.

I'm the original owner and it's served me well, running demos at Galibier Design, and it's time to move on.

It has some of the most bomb-proof construction I've seen this side of guitar amps (which are designed to withstand the abuse of roadies). 

You'll note in the internal photos, the signal path is dual mono construction.  The top layer is one channel.  Flip the unit over and remove the bottom cover and you have the bottom channel.  This is how I'd build a line/phono stage if I ever took on such a project.

This straight-forward design employs a total of 5 tubes:

• PCC88 in the phono stage (a 7 volt version of the ECC88/6922)
• 4-12SN7GTs (two in the phono stage and two in the line stage)

For the phono lover who runs multiple tonearms, there are three phono inputs (all for MC) with loading of 82, 180, and 392 (loading can be changed).  The gain is active (no step-up transformers), and is sufficient for the lowest of output cartridges (some say, a bit too much, but that's up for discussion).

Features are straight-forward: 

• Dual mono volume controls
• 3 line level inputs
• 3 phono inputs.
• Phono out (separate from the two line level outputs)

The separate phono out is convenient for running a signal into my Feickert Adjust+ and AnalogMagik setup software.  While this is a minor feature, it's quite convenient, and I will certainly miss this.
