Component History...

Purchased from the Original Owner in August 2021...
This Resolution Audio Opus 21 CD Player has a built-in D/A converter (DAC) in black/aluminum style. The DAC input is S/PDIF Coaxial on RCA only.
It is rated at 24-bit and 96k Hz max and has two matching units with the power supply and display box separate from the transport box.
The DIN output provides fixed output level. Balanced (XLR) and unbalanced (RCA) outputs.
Serviced in 2014 by Resolution Audio with a new transport (actually a re-install of the original transport after the previous owner had traded it out), was given a clean bill of health by RA and has had limited use since its return in 2014 ...

The owner also gave me the other Transport Laser Mechanism that was switched out in 2014 .
It will be included in this sale as well... * Refer to the photos

Cosmetically...

Both the CD Transport and the Separate Power Supply are in near Mint Condition .
The Cable and Remote are in very similar condition.
It will be shipped in its Original Wooden Crate with Heavy Duty Foam Padding.

Operationally...

Having owned a number of CD Players during my Audio Journey, the Opus 21 was an "Ear Opening" experience for sure. In researching this Resolution Audio Digital Component, review after review had me wondering if what they were all saying in unanimous agreement was true ?

Well much to my surprise, it was! As we know, hearing is a very subjective subject, as well as our individual systems challenges, that we try to address as to achieve "Audio Listening Nirvana", with the Listening Room as an element that we sometimes can overlook.
This player was designed not with a spreadsheet of digital algorithms as the design template.
Its design and function with the addition of its own onboard DAC gives one increased system flexibility.

The Tube-like presentation this Opus 21 presents is not a bloated bass syrup ridden digital coverup for sure. The presentation of the music is all about just that...the music! Its multi dimensional soundstage rendering of CD after CD had me affixed to my listening spot for many hours each listening session during my ownership.

Instrumentation is presented in a lifelike manner that few Digital Players can match without an untold price tag. The treble has no reflections of edginess or stridency nor does the bass region inflate the music to any degree.
In the genres of music I listened to as to give a fair assessment of my system with the Opus 21 as the center stage source, it became more and more apparent this was what all the reviewers scribed was indeed true.
Hearing music as it was recorded and intended to be heard from the artists creative intention did not ever fall short in my system ...

Review From The Audiogon Discussion Forum...

" The Opus 21 is a two box unit, one for the transport and DAC, the other for the digital display and power supply-my unit is solver on silver. Each box is very small, and light. The Opus has a 99 step analog volume control which is designed to go direct to amp, as Resolution Audio recommends no preamp! Balanced and RCA outs are supplied. A digital input is included for DVD players or other PCM sources. A remote with direct track access and volume control is included. "

" This is the most well balanced digital source I have experienced. The vocals are smooth and rich, although not syrupy or tube-like. The highs are completely non-fatiguing, extended but never ever harsh. The bass is firm and well defined, but never bloated or mushy. There is absolutely no part of this machine which stands over the other, it is very well balanced. "

" The sound staging and 3-dimensionality is second to none. Instruments appear out of blackness deep behind the speakers, while vocals seem to float over the front of the speakers. There is so much layering and depth that I find myself going through my entire CD collection to see what I have been missing. There is an uncanny air and naturalness to instruments. Drums have a defined impact and resonation within their own space. Cymbals have natural decay not heard on my system before."

"I feel very drawn into the music, each instrument has its own space and can easily be followed. There is no smearing of instruments or vocals on complex passages. Amazing. The sound is alive, clean and open!
In terms of musicality, the Opus 21 has it in spades. Having sold my Accuphase DP-65V because it specifically lacked musicality (to my ears) I was delighted and relieved to have the toe tapping musical involvement back...
