In general, a step-up transformer raises a low output Moving Coil (MC) phono cartridge signal up to a practical level that allows you to input your MC turntable source through the more common Moving Magnet (MM) phono input that your preamplifier, or the front end of your integrated amplifier, is much more likely to have. This also applies if you want to use a separate 'MM' phono stage amplifier in front of one of your system's standard 'analog' inputs.
