Marantz SA-7S1 CD / SACD Player RAM Mods, Ultraclock, Transformer Output, more!

Marantz SA-7S1 CD/SACD player, very heavily upgraded by Reference Audio Mods. A superb player of the highest caliber to begin with, virtually every critical internal component has been upgraded over the standard factory parts to the very best available. The analog output stage is completely replaced with transformers for a purity of signal that is unsurpassed. The top of the line Audicom Ultraclock (with dedicated power supply) takes the digital section to insane levels of accuracy. This is true state of the art digital performance, so extremely satisfying on any kind of music.

These mods were completed in late 2009, and include almost everything from the RAM menu. From RAM's site:

--Audiocom UltraClock Upgrade and Ultraclock PSU upgrade COMBO ($1550 installed)--
• Replace stock oscillator circuit with the improved Audiocom Statement Ultraclock. The Ultraclock presents the pinnacle of clock technology building upon the strengths of the Superclock 4. Every parameter has been optimized thus resulting in vastly lower jitter. The clock itself has even been Cryogenically treated for optimal resonance control. The difference we hear at RAM is astonishing! A sense of immediacy is easily noticeable with greater inner detail and more correct harmonic structure. Bass definition and impact now resemble that of SOTA turntables. This is probably the most telling improvement. We never though there were any problems in the bass until Ultraclock arrived.

• Adding an Ultraclock PSU to power the Ultraclock is simply required for optimal performance. Comprised of SOTA level components and a unique voltage regulation circuit Audiocom has managed to provide a PSU without equal. Basically head and shoulders above even the Superclock 4 PSU!

--Power Supply upgrades ($850 installed)--
Replace all crucial rectification stages with RAM custom made exotic diode bridges featuring Audio Consulting silver wire and ultra fast SMD diodes.

Replace main reservoir capacitors in circuit with Rubycon ZL/ZLG’s.

Replace all decoupling capacitors on Power Supply board and Analog Circuit Board with the Rubycon ZA/ZLG/ZL series capacitors. The Rubycon capacitors are extremely low in impedance and high in ripple current. We believe they easily outperform even the best series blackgates offering unmatched realism and lifelike character.

Replace DAC voltage regulator with the new Audiocom Ultra Regulator. The latest regulation circuit from Audiocom has revealed how limiting the common voltage regulator is on our music. Incredible bandwidth, superior low noise voltage reference, and very low impedance allows unrestricted energy transfer allowing the dacs to perform optimally.

--Audio Consulting Coupling Transformer Stage/Part Replacements ($1000 Installed)--
Uniquely removes 2 of the 3 HDAM sets within the analog output stage. Install Swiss Made Audio Consulting Signal Coupling transformers after the I/V stage. The unique Swiss transformers are a key element to the sound we have here at RAM. As we have always stated and learned “not all transformers are alike” DRAMATIC IMPROVEMENT!

Add high quality, high speed buffers to improve current increasing presence and dynamics with extremely low loss of signal integrity(we only hear transparent improvement

Replace many capacitors with Rubycon ZL/ZLG’s for rail decoupling

Use Audio Consulting silver wire and cotton tubing point to point for all wiring for the output stage wiring.

Unit has Esoteric brand RCAs and XLR jacks installed (see pics), I believe they were ~$180 for that upgrade.

I also installed 7 Hi-Fi Tuning Fuses at $40 per fuse or $280.

In total, this unit has received $3,800 in mods alone. Original unit was $4800. Total value: $8,600.
