"If you are a classical music lover with a small room and an equally small budget, a pair of PSB's Alpha B1s is just what you need. Extraordinary value."--Stereophile magazine.
The PSB Alpha B1 is a 2-way speaker design that sounds very musical. PSB uses a solid bass-reflex cabinet loaded with their custom-designed, hand-built drivers and crossover network. Stereophile magazine has honored the Alpha B1 by including it in its "Recommended Components" list for 8 years in a row.
The PSB Alpha B1 bookshelf speakers were in The Absolute Sound 2013 High-End Buyer’s Guide. They were labelled “product of the year” by several different reviewers.
These speakers sound great for audio or a home theater setup in a modest-size room. They sound very natural (not the boxiness of some speakers).
“Articulation and Extension”
The Absolute Sound rated the PSB Alpha B1 as the “Best Stand-Mounted Speakers” in the Winter 2008/Spring 2009 issue. “With a predominantly honest voice that strikes a judicious balance between articulation and extension, the B1’s mid-bass has remarkable power and pitch.”
“Mind-Bending Dynamics”
The October 2012 issue of The Absolute Sound awarded the PSB Alpha B1 its “Editors’ Choice” recommendation. “Yet another ‘how-does-he-do-it?’ loudspeaker from the prolific mind of Paul Barton. The new, more curvaceous Alpha combines mind-bending dynamics and rich mids in a speaker barely a foot tall.”
“I can’t remember the last time that a speaker weighing just under 10 pounds dripping wet made me want to listen to so much music,” reports Neil Gader in the March 2007 issue of The Absolute Sound. “At its humble price, the Alpha B1 is so much more than just a good little speaker – it’s an achievement that borders on the surreal.”
The 8/10 rating is somewhat conservative. Except for a some minimal wear and tear to the veneer on the rear base corners, the speakers are in excellent condition.
I have a pair of 24" matte black speaker stands (Sanus Systems) that I am willing to sell with the speakers for an additional $50.
