The stock Peachtree Audio iDAC was just rated Class A in the newest Stereophile. They felt it was the best under $1000.00 DAC. It also has a direct digital iPod dock. Add an iPod Touch or iPhone & get 17,000 Internet radio stations as well as Rhapsody or Pandora.
We have just finished a modification to the excellent iDAC D to A Converter that makes it a good bit better.
The Aug 2011 (Issue 214) Absolute Sound review of the stock DAC was a Rave. Steven Stone loved it.
The Peachtree Audio iDAC is one of our favorite DAC's at anywhere near its $999.00 price. In addition to sounding great it has a Direct Digital iPod doc that allows you to connect an iPod, iPhone and iPod Touch digitally right to the doc without going thru the iPod analog circuitry. This allows Internet direct payback of virtually all radio stations as well as sites like Pandora and Rhapsody.
We have compared the iDAC to DAC's selling for double its price and it holds its own. This is a superb $1000.00 DAC even without the Doc.
It features a 32 bit Sabre DAC to dramatically lower jitter on all sources. There are 5 digital inputs in addition to the iPod doc. There are two coaxial, 2 optical and a 24 bit 96K USB input to playback hi-rez downloads. Hook up any CD player or inexpensive DVD player to the iDAC for a superb digital playback system that is also ready for the new hi-rez computer downloads.
The stock DAC features are at the bottom of the ad. However, it is worth noting that the DAC has transformer-coupled digital inputs & the USB input is Galvanically isolated to reduce ground noise from computer's switching power supply. These are very important features that many DAC's omit.
We love this DAC and have designed a mod to make it compete with DAC's that sell for over $3000.00.
The following details our Level-1 mod to the iDAC. The mod was designed by Chris Johnson, the founder and former president of Sonic Frontiers:
a) 1 pr. Vampire copper RCA Female Jacks replace the inexpensive stamped stock jacks
b) Twenty Six ELNA, RFS Silmic II series and NICHICON KZ Muse audio-grade electrolytic coupling capacitors are added to the units output stage and Power Supply. These are all super low ESL & ESR.
c) 2 Burr-Brown OPA-627AU op amp (regarded as the best IC monolithic op amp made) replace the stock dual opamp. These are soldered to a custom DUAL DIP adapter.
d) 10 ft. of WBT Solder is used throughout the mod
e) The mod takes 3.5 hours of labor
Sonic improvements with the Level-1 mod are amazing:
Bass and dynamics are dramatically improved. It is now smoother sounding (caps), more transparent (connectors, wire) and imaging and 3-dimensionality are brought to near world-class level.
Our mod takes this excellent DAC to a level that will allow it to compete with DAC's that sell for $3000-4000.00. Plus it has the iPod DAC that makes it a world class tuner with the addition of an iPhone or $200.00 iTouch.
The Level-1 mod to your DAC is $700.00 + freight.
New modified DAC's are $1590.00 + freight.
1) Add $140.00 for WBT Silver RCA jacks
2)Add $250.00 for a dual DEXA opamp with over 75 discrete parts
