The Phono 2 is Audiomat's fourth and best phono stage and all have been highly acclaimed. The Phono 2 is no longer made (guessing due to cost of parts).
I've opted for a Shindo Monbrison to match my Shindo amp, but the Phono 2 is just as good in terms of realism and enjoyment. I'm the original owner and it's 2 years old.
UHF magazine: "Performance that borders on magic . . . a superb phono stage such as this one shows you all that you've been missing and didn't even know it."
Review from German magazine: "The Audiomat Phono 2.0 is an evolution of the Phono 1.6 and undoubtedly one of the top devices under phono preamps. Exceptional and intelligent details make it that the brothers Denis and Norbert Clarisse of Audiomat have built not only a technically advanced but also an emotionally inspiring device.
The Phono 2.0 is completely built in transistor technology and distributed on two aluminum housings. In the smaller housing the power supply has its place, the greater one houses the actual phono stage and thus protected against interference from the power supply.
The preamp is switchable between MM and MC, which are available for both versions on the back of his own RCA connector sockets.
In the MC mode, the pickup does not have to, as usual, be adjusted by means of load resistors, since this is a current-controlled ("self-adjusting") input. It is designed for MC cartridges with an internal resistance (i.e. ohms) between 1 and 200 (and thus fits the vast majority of pickups on the market.
Particular emphasis is placed on the capacitors used in the power supply. Here only the highest caliber are optimally adapted to their intended use, such as film capacitors of SCR.
Sonically 2.0 is part of the few devices on the market that not only play music that is enthralling, but simultaneously is also in the positive sense neutral and not pressing on the playback their own stamp.
Listen to the Phono 2.0 and convince yourself of his qualities!"
Separate housing having an absorbent coating for the power supply to avoid electrical and mechanical interference
Exclusive use of discrete components, not integrated circuits
RIAA equalization with high-quality polypropylene and mica capacitors
MC-gain stage with low negative feedback, current controlled input for pickups with an internal resistance of 1 - 200 ohms
Polypropylene coupling capacitors in Military Quality
Low-ESR capacitors in the power supply for low ripple of the supply voltage
