Here's a cheaper alternative (the only one I'm aware of) to a VPI SDS (or clearaudio synchro, or walker, motor controller, etc). This SE version can accept a regular 15A mains (though, no ground. I will include a thick three prong to two prong PC) for AC motors. I used this to great effect with my VPI SAMA, though will work with any simlar motor. Allows for adjustment of speed in .1 increments.
I have the original box and packaging as well.
