“The PerfectWave DAC produced the most significant improvement of any audio component I’ve ever added to my system. John Sciacca: Sound + Vision

A remarkable new DAC
The PS Audio PerfectWave DAC is a remarkable new class of product that makes high-end music fun again. It accesses high-resolution digital audio data from multiple sources such as a CD transport , CD player, computer, network, or the Internet and converts the data to the most musically natural sounding analog audio ever produced.

The PWD is one of a very few high-end products to fully transcend the limitations of traditional digital to analog converters (DACS) by providing uncompromised performance for any media delivery or storage system possible. This means that it no longer matters how the digital audio data is stored or delivered, the PWD produces the same high performance audio sent over a network, taken from a hard drive, a CD or even downloaded via the Internet.

The PWD is a complete solution that can be used in a multitude of ways. As a standalone DAC, the PWD will accept inputs from any digitally connected source such as a CD player, CD transport, satellite receiver, music server or computer.

As a music server, the PWD can access and control any DLNA compatible network source such as a network hard drive (NAS ), or stream music directly off the Internet.

And as a preamplifier control center, the PWD connects directly to your power amplifier controlling the volume, balance and any of the seven connected sources.

And now, the Mark II DAC
Since the introduction of the ground breaking PerfectWave DAC and network Bridge, nearly two years ago, the pace of technological innovation from PS Audio’s engineering team hasn’t slowed down one bit.

Introducing the Mark II version of the PWD – a major leap forward in performance and features. The Mark II comes with a completely redesigned digital inputboard, software, connecting cables and remote control as well as the addition of a PS Audio Critical Link fuse for the power supply. New features of the Mark II include 192kHz 24 bit asynchronous USB, NativeX mode, non-saturated logic data path, 11 additional power supplies, lower jitter and a precision balance control for the volume.

Whether you’re using the network Bridge or any of the 7 digital inputs, the new Mark II PWD outperforms the Mark I and any DAC we have ever built over the years. Sweet, open, analog and musical, the Mark II represents a new class of digital media player.

Owners of the original Mark I PerfectWave DAC will be able to upgrade fully to the Mark II standard by replacing the digital processing board, fuse and software upgrade. The procedure can be handled by PWD owners at home or available for professional installation through your dealer, distributor or PS Audio directly.

Digital Media Player
The PerfectWave Media DAC II is a high resolution Digital Music Player (Media Server) that brings uncompromised music into your high-end audio system without the need for anything other than the love of music.

With the MKII PerfectWave system you can store your music in one place and access it anywhere in your home or from a CD, DVD or computer; it’s your call. With the MK II the source no longer matters.

What comes out of the PWD Mark II directly into your amplifier is music as good as it gets with details you never knew were there. With the PerfectWave system, compromise is not something you worry about as you rediscover everything in your library as if it were the first time.

The MKII will put a smile on your face with its high-resolution, high-end performance analog outputs and music at the touch of a finger. Simply and easily connect the PWD MKII into your setup and forever change the way you listen to and enjoy your music.

Getting closer to the source
A music server is a digital audio library with a convenient way to access and playback all the material in the library. It is an electronic version of what we all do: search our CD or vinyl collections, choose what we want to hear, insert the media into our players and enjoy. Only now, you access that music from anywhere in your home at the touch of a finger.

“You’ll breathe new life into your digital music library and be stunned how good your discs sound.” The PerfectWave system gets you closer to the music than you’ve ever been before.

The MK II treats digital audio as if it were a direct feed right from the recording studio without compromise, jitter or digital artifacts. Music sounds natural, analog, warm and just plain right.

The MK II’s new NativeX feature ensures low jitter analog-like performance from any source regardless of quality.

“You’ll breathe new life into your digital music library and be stunned how good your discs sound.”

PWD Basics
The PWD Mark II has 7 digital inputs that include two I2S over HDMI, an optical TOSLINK, coax S/PDIF, balanced AES/EBU, 192kHz 24 bit USB and the network Bridge.

The HDMI inputs are designed not for accepting HDMI data, but instead are utilized in a unique PS designed standard for I2S data. I2S data is the native data management system within every transport, CD player and DAC. It consists of three separate clocks and one digital audio data line.

When a separate transport and D to A processor are used in a system, the I2S data inside the transport is typically mixed together to form one single data line so it can easily be transferred between the transport and the DAC through either optical, coax or balanced means. The format used to send this data is called S/PDIF (Sony Phillips Digital Interface) and is found on every CD player and transport from the least expensive to the most expensive units. S/PDIF certainly isn’t the best sounding format but in many cases it’s all we have to work with.

Digital Lens
A feature unique to the PerfectWave MKII is a built in Digital Lens. A Digital Lens is much like the Power Plant regenerator in its ability to produce a new and perfect output from any quality you put into it. The Digital Lens takes in any digital audio signal you feed it and regenerates a new and jitter free version sent on to the DAC. The new feature is called NativeX.

Simply select the NativeX mode from the MKII’s remote control or front panel touch screen and prepare to be startled at the improved performance of any connected media. What you hear may be, at first, stunning. Openness, greater depth and substance to voices and instruments – they just seem to take on a renewed sense of being closer to the source – as if the recording engineer moved the microphone a little closer to the instrument.

NativeX will reduce incoming jitter levels to below 1 pico second, regardless of how jittered the incoming signals are and when this happens, the associated glare and hard edge to the music vanishes and in its place, the most analog-like music you’ve heard emerges. This will change everything you think about digital audio.

Once the S/PDIF signal is received by the DAC it must then be separated back into its I2S components and that is where the trouble lies. The process of encoding and then decoding the I2S data into SPDIF data compromises the audio quality on a high-end system. The PWD Mark II solves this problem in two ways: through the built in Digital Lens and through our unique I2S over HDMI for products like the PerfectWave Memory Playerthat use I2S technology. Whichever choice is made the audible results are breathtaking. Openness and clarity like you’ve never experienced in your digital audio system; ever.

The PerfectWave DAC Mark II has all the inputs you’ll ever need to get music into your high-end system. Two I2S zero jitter inputs, high speed asynchronous USB, coax, optical and AES/EBU plus, of course, the optional Network Bridge.

NativeX works on lowering jitter on any selected input on the PWD. This means even highly jittered sources such as an Apple TV or a computer sound card will suddenly have a fog of jitter removed. The feature is rather remarkable.

Even the optional Network Bridge, which has its own built in Digital Lens benefits. Because the path between the output of the Network Bridge and the MKII processing board is short, there’s little chance for added jitter: but not zero. Running the already low jitter digital audio from the Network Bridge through NativeX helps open the sound up quite nicely.

The PerfectWave Bridge

To be able to play music stored on your computer, external hard drive or NAS (Network Attached Storage) you can add the optional PerfectWave Bridge.

The PerfectWave Bridge is a remarkable piece of engineering that connects all your digital music sources in your home together through your home’s network. The Bridge is the key to playing music at the touch of a finger over a home network with your iPhone, iPad, iPod or Droid mobile device.

With the Bridge installed in the PWD Mark II a whole new world of connected high-resolution audio is opened up to you at the touch of a finger. The Bridge provides bit perfect performance of any sample rate music up to 192kHz, 32 bit audio. The Bridge accepts any network audio sent to it and converts that stream to jitter free I2S data that is then fed into a built in Digital Lens that asynchronously connects the audio in jitter free fashion directly to the PWD Mark II’s audio palyer.

The bottom line is this: when outfitted with a PerfectWave Bridge, the PWD MK II breathes new life into your stored digital audio collection, regardless of where they are in your home, and all at the touch of a finger. Fun is back to high-end audio.

The second Digital Lens
If you outfit the PWD MKII with a Network Bridge you wind up with two Digital Lens inside: one specific to the Bridge and the second available as NativeX for all inputs. The Bridge has its own Lens because there’s no way to guarantee that music streamed over the internet or your home network will always be perfect and musically satisfying unless it is managed by a Digital Lens specific to network traffic.

As with any Digital Lens we have designed over the last 20 years, it takes any quality of digital audio data, focuses it to a single perfect point and outputs consistently perfect audio – even music streamed over a network or the internet.

The Lens in the Bridge does this with the use of a very large digital storage tank (memory) coupled with a jitter free set of asynchronous (disconnected) clocks to output data to the PWD’s digital processing board in the I2S format. You may then choose to run the output of the Bridge through the central Digital Lens, NativeX, to achieve the final bit of polish that helps perfect the performance.

This means that regardless of how the musical data is sent, via the internet or the network, the quality of the data reaching the PWD Mark II through the Bridge is the same. [/wpcol_1half_end]

The net result of these technological marvels is something to behold. The beautiful full color touch screen on the PWD gives you a great user interface. The Bridge handles data from any storage device you own or accesses music from anywhere in the world, and the internal D to A processor of the PWD converts that digital data into analog music that is warm, natural and musically satisfying beyond your expectations.

Minimum phase and apodizing filters
All DACS and digital media servers rely on filters to cleanup the audio and help make the music sound open and natural. The qualities of these highly technical filters have a great deal of impact on how the music sounds through your system.

In the PWD Mark II we engineered in the best sounding apodizing and phase correct filters and all are available at the touch of a finger on the PWD Mark II’s touch screen or through the supplied IR remote control. Simply try each one and choose which sounds the best to you.

So natural are these filters that they help the PWD Mark II sound analog-like and as open and accurate as any high-fidelity presentation you’re likely to hear.

We offer multiple filter choices because our experience has shown that different digital sources sound better with different digital filters. The PWD Mark II will actually memorize each of the filter choices for each of the inputs so when you choose your favorite filter it will always come up to optimize the particular input you have selected.

The 5 filters available on the PWD Mark II are:

1. Linear phase ‘soft knee filter’
2. Minimum phase ‘soft knee filter’
3. Linear phase Brickwall filter
4. Minimum phase apodizing filter
5. linear phase apodizing filter

We have also added a feature for the filters known as “Auto”. Auto filter chooses the best selection of filter based on the sample rate chosen. This means that as you play different sample rates, such as when you switch to USB and the sample rate goes to 192kHz 24 bits, the appropriate filter is automatically chosen for you. The auto filter chooses one of the five available filters.

Over the life of the PWD Mark II we have come to find that most of our owners place the PWD in auto and trust the designer’s decisions of which filter to us for the best audio presentation.

Polarity inversion
One of the handiest features on the PWD Mark II that will see a great deal of use is the polarity (phase) control. This touch screen option (available on the remote as well) allows users to select normal or inverted phase for every input and for every performance.

It is common knowledge that sources and music have seemingly no standard for absolute polarity. This fact is easily demonstrated by switching polarities on the PWD Mark II as the music plays. Many Audiophiles mark their discs in phase and out of phase and are very careful to select the proper phase before playing each disc.

Some CD players and sources themselves invert phase so that a disc you believe is inverted actually is correct played on a specific device and incorrect on yet another. To fix this problem you can assign each input on the PWD Mark II to switch to the proper polarity when you activate that input.Touching this control is the same thing as reversing the loudspeaker connections of both loudspeakers (+ to -) at either the amplifier or speakers.

All live acoustic music is in absolute phase but some recordings may accidentally be made inverted and should sound more realistic and pleasant when you correct their phase with the switch.

When a playback system is in absolute phase (polarity) when the transients of the reproduced performance are in sync with the transients of the live performance.

Balance control
The vast majority of PWD Mark II owners will use the output of the PWD Mark II directly into their power amplifiers – bypassing their preamplifiers for the shortest and best sounding audio path. New to the Mark II is addition of a precision balance control accessed through the unit’s remote control.

Use the balance control to snap your system into razor sharp focus – thus making up for any slight level differences between loudspeaker pairs or room interactions.

Inside the PWD Mark II itself
Inside the PWT Mark II is an amazing piece of engineering that features the latest in technology coupled with parts quality and circuitry of the highest order.

The heart of the PWD Mark II is a Wolfson WM8742 stereo differential DAC, one of the latest generations of high-end DACS in the world. The extraordinary low order modulator and multi-bit DAC architecture found in the WM8742 achieves low out-of-band noise and world-class linearity for outstanding sound quality.

The DAC displays characteristics typically associated only with extraordinarily expensive high end audio products including group delay, phase and latency, impulse response and transition band roll off. These features significantly reduce pre-ringing and give maximum insensitivity to clock jitter .

PS Audio’s move to the Wolfson family of DACS is a major shift for the company. Formerly, in award winning products like the DLIII DAC, PS Audio engineering featured the Texas Instruments’ family of multi-bit DACS. The shift to Wolfson is a result of hundreds of hours of listening and evaluating in the sound room and the Wolfson family, the first of a new generation of DACS, trounced the TI parts which are the last of TI’s older technology.

Parts quality
Parts quality is a critical factor in any high-resolving audio product where the goal is to recreate the sound of live music in your home. Sound so real you can reach out and touch the performers. To achieve this designers must address every single aspect of the product from the design to the parts themselves. In particular, the analog portion of any DAC is the single most critical area for audio performance. On the PerfectWave Mark II, every inch of the design has been labored over and listened to in order to achieve the stunning musical performance the instrument is capable of. In the analog section of the PWD we spared nothing. We eliminated all the surface mount parts in the signal path. Years of listening have confirmed for us the surface mount capacitors and resistors sound inferior to the best “through hole” passives. In our more affordable products surface mount parts help keep costs down and sound great. But when it comes to the PW series we were unwilling to budge even a little.

Every component is hand chosen, listened to and evaluated. Resistors are the best in the world – PRP PR9372 audio resistors. Power supply capacitors are hand selected low ESR types.

The audio path is, of course, completely direct coupled from input to output.

In the ever important analog power supply, large transformers handled by discrete Jung regulators proliferate the analog circuit board. There are 11 separate low noise regulators on the digital input board alone – plus another five on the analog board.

Because the PWD Mark II is a no-holds-barred high-end DAC we made sure there were absolutely no integrated circuits or op amps of any kind in the signal path. None. Every component is a discrete proprietary audio design developed and refined over the last 40 years of audio design expertise and experience.

Outside the PWD
The chassis of the PWD Mark II is a metal sculpture that is bar far the best we’ve ever built. A combination of aluminum and steel, the PWD weighs in at 20 pounds of elegance and beauty. The top cover is a hand painted, hand polished piano black material that has been lavished over for hours.

When you receive your PWD Mark II, you’ll find a pair of soft white gloves to pull the unit out of its protective cotton sleeve and unveil its beauty. Every person who has had the opportunity to see a PerfectWave Mark II in person has the same initial reaction: they reach out and softly caress it’s finish and admire its beautiful lines.

Built in Boulder
The PerfectWave series is assembled, programmed and tested at our production facility in Boulder Colorado. There is a measure of pride of workmanship that goes into every one of these PerfectWave products and it shows from the moment you open the unit up and plug it in.

This is one gorgeous piece of equipment and just the beginning of the most beautiful natural sounding audio equipment you have ever had the privilege to own.

See your local PS Audio dealer for an audition today. It’s time to get back to the music and forget everything else.
