Quicksilver's description of the Silver 88:
" The new Silver 88 brings the finesse and transparency of low powered tube amplifers into the realm of less efficient speakers. Employing only two output tubes, this circuit provides 80 watts without stressing or pushing these tubes to their limit, and with the lowest output impedance and distortion of all the Quicksilver amplifiers, the Silver 88 brings a new level of performance to this power range.
An on-board bias meter allows individual adjustment of each output tube and, with low-noise power supplies and circuitry, the Silver 88 can still be used on very efficient speakers. Two power transformers and 180 Joules of energy storage provide effortless dynamic response, transmitting the full musical impact of sudden shifts from soft to loud. A modification of the sleek look of the V4, the Silver 88 has a chrome-plated chassis and carbide black transformer cover.
Price $4495.00 Per Pair."
From Owner's Manual: "The output transformer used in this amplifier is based on the best designs of the past but uses superior new materials to achieve a very high level of performance. The high frequency characteristics of this transformer are so stable that any type of loudspeaker may be used. This is an all tube design and uses no circuit boards or transistors."
From Stereophile Review:
"Might this be one of the greatest bargains in hi-fi?
Even without a first rate preamp in my system, the Silver 88 delivered stunning resolution with both the Verity Lenore and Opera Grand Callas speakers.
What made Quicksilver Audio's Silver 88 Mono Amplifier special was its harmonic presentation. I don't like to trot out that "truth of timbre" business, but it was there: Instruments and vocalists had a realism, a harmonic structure, that even the best solid state amplifiers can't seem to get right. And, oh yes, there was three-dimensionality: palpable presence and all that stuff." Stereophile
Amps are in excellent condition. There are some light scratch marks that can be found in chrome in a few spots on close inspection thus I will rate 8/10 otherwise should be 9/10.
Tubes that will come with amp:
I have JJ KT88s (quad), Chinese 12AX7 (pair), GE 12BH7 (pair). These are the tubes that ship with the amp and that Mike Sanders of Quicksilver recommends. KT90 tubes can also be used. The KT120 tube can also be used for a slight increase in output power but not necessarily better sound per Mike Sanders of Quicksilver.
In addition I have a pair of Mullard CV4004 (12AX7 replacements) that sell for $125.00 each at Upscale Audio, A pair of Sylvania 12BH7A from Upscale Audio that sell for $40.00 each, and a pair of RCA 12BH7A. Easily about $800.00 worth of tubes in all when new. All tubes check good on a B&K 747 tester.
Amps will be packed in original boxes and then in another box for shipping. Local pickup also available.
