Ravel: Daphnis et Chloe (Complete Ballet) London FFSS CS-6147 blueback.
London Symphony Orchestra and Chorus of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden (Chorus Master: Douglas Robinson) Conductor: Pierre Monteux.
This record is a must for any lover of Ravel’s masterpiece. Recorded on April 27, 1959 in Kingsway Hall. John Culshaw, producer; Alan Reeve, engineer. This is the classic and best known stereo performance of this work in the pre-digital age. Monteux conducted the first performance of Daphnis Chloe in 1912, yet as J ohn Culshaw writes in “Putting the record straight” it took some effort to produce this historic recording.
As a result of enthusiasm and enormous skill in the dubbing process, Daphnis eventually came out complete on two sides. It is, and always will be, one of my favorite records, not simply because it happens to be conducted by the man who had been responsible for its premiere, but because of the way he treated the music, which was to relate each part to its context and to see the work as a whole.
