NOS in white boxes. Coke bottle "ST" shape. Military spec tubes. Made by RCA under several different brand names. Don't confuse these with the newer version marked JAN RCA. This are among the early World War II production. These feature twin D bottom getters, Circular top mica. Medium to dull black plates with extra support rods. Micanol bases range in color from light brown to very dark cherry brown, all with military designations.
To the best of my recollection these 5R4GY challenge the
"Holy Grail" of rectifiers, the original Western Electric 274 A & B
This particular version features low noise, even when compared to the WE.
These tubes can dramatically improve the signal quality of Chinese made amplifiers using the current production Chinese 274B , no matter what you pay for them. I have a current production Chinese, 300B output integrated, which I modified. The mod with the most bang for the buck is simply inserting these $40 tubes for the Chinese current production 274B. If your amp calls for a 12AX7 input replace them with 12AT7. Everybody readily agrees the 12AT7 is the much better choice, but they have thousands of chassis already stamped 12AX7.
