This Marantz 18 Receiver is  one-of-a-kind, having a singularly unique provenance and direct personal relationship to Saul Marantz himself, as recounted below.
I founded and ran a high-end audio salon in Memphis, TN named OPUS/2, which opened in 1965.  There were no Marantz dealers anywhere in the Mid-South at that time, and I made the daring decision to invite Saul Marantz to the Grand Opening to appoint OPUS/2 as a new Marantz dealer and to introduce audiophiles in the Mid-South to Marantz products. HE ACCEPTED, and spent 3 days in my store,  meeting customers and also demonstrating his products!  The Grand Opening was a smashing success.
I became friends with Saul and visited with him and Jean, his wife, in their home in Kew Gardens, Queens, NYC on several occasions. One of those visits was an unbelieveable dream come true, when upon my arrival at Saul's home I was introduced to none other than Andre Segovia and sat enraptured as Maestro Segovia and Saul Marantz played classical guitar together for about 2 hours. I soon learned that Saul was an ardent student of classical guitar and was himself very accomplished.
In 1967 Saul told me on a telephone call that he was resigning from Marantz, which had been sold 2-3 years earlier to Joseph Tushinsky, who owned Superscope and wanted to broaden the Marantz product line.  Saul wanted nothing to do with that.  The end of the iconic Marantz legacy was plainly in sight, and I expressed to Saul a desire to have a Model 18 Receiver for myself that he had personally selected.  To my astonishment and great delight, Saul then said that he would like to send me that receiver as a gift in remembrance of our relationship.  Saul's gift arrived at my shop only days before his departure from Marantz in the Fall of 1967.
I am now at 80 years of age and nearly deaf, and I want this very special receiver to be in the hands of a true audiophile who will treasure it in honor of  the greatest audiophile and kindest gentleman I have ever known.  This is the receiver I am offering for sale.  It is fully functional and completely original, except for new dial bulbs. But my hearing is so bad  I am unqualified to pass judgment on its sound at this time, although I have no reason to think it is any different from the same exquisite and ground-breaking product Saul Marantz hand-selected for me back in 1967.
If an iconic chapter in audiophile history is meaningful to you, then this receiver is a mother lode of riches.
