I owned the high-end audio salon named OPUS/2 in Memphis, TN, and opened in 1965. Saul Marantz himself attended the Grand Opening of OPUS/2 and greeted customers for 3 days. We became friends, and when the Model 18 Receiver was introduced, Mr. Marantz personally selected the best one from the line and gave it to me as a gift. I am 79 now and nearly deaf, so I wish to sell this unique receiver to someone who will appreciate and treasure it as I have. It is fully functional and in good cosmetic condition, although I have not been able to enjoy it for several years. This receiver has a very special provenance and it should remain in the care of someone with an appreciation for the uncompromising genius that created it and for such a first-generation iconic item bearing the "fingerprints" of the master himself. This may be the only such Marantz product in existence.
Saul Marantz was a man of many talents and a warm and gracious gentleman. He was an avid student of classical guitar and a friend of Andre Segovia. I had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hear Segovia and Marantz play together in Saul's home in Kew Gardens, Queens, NYC. Their playing still lives in my memory as though it were yesterday.
Sadly, I cannot keep this treasure, and there is no one in my family with true audiophile understanding or appreciation, so it must be passed on to a new keeper.
