Classic Rowland Research preamp.
3 piece design (Line section/Strain gauge phono section/power supply).
Strain Gauge Phono Section and Power Supply are bolted together, which can be separated I believe.
There is almost no info on this preamp so I asked Mr. Jeff Rowland while I was in CES this year.
He told me the phono section on this preamp (STA-1) is Strain Gauge design and will no work with regular MC/MM cartridge. Moreover, power indicator does not come on the phono piece (STA-1).
So, unless STA-1 works AND Strain Gauge phono cartridge is used, this can only be used for line preamp.
Volume control is stepped (21 steps).
Left and Right Trim pots are a little noisy when turning (only when turning), which has no impact sonically.
Strain Gauge Phono section (STA-1) top plate screws are missing.
It makes mighty good sound from my 88 db Bright Star Altair speakers combined with Rowland Research power amp is listed elsewhere in Audiogon.
Jeff did not waste lots of money face/case for this preamp.
Definitely have tube like Jeff Rowland sound IMHO.
