OVERVIEW
An Incredible Pure Sounding Preamplifier
Cambridge Audio's 851E is a true analog preamplifier which offers an incredibly pure signal. The 851E delivers so little harmonic distortion and adds so little noise to incoming signals that it's barely measurable.
Vastly improving over its predecessors, the 851E has a number of innovations, including a solid state volume control that offers precise control in 1 dB step. This control maintains channel balance accurately at low levels and offers truly linear performance, all without introducing any distortion to the precious analog source signal.
Eight Inputs, Including Three Balanced
The 851E offers flexible source connections with eight inputs, including three XLR balanced inputs for superior audio fidelity and to match the best high-end modern sources. In case you don't want or need the balanced inputs, they are switchable so that you can use unbalanced connections instead. The 851E includes balanced and unbalanced outputs, too.
The 851E's headphone output will deliver high quality sound. It's a great option for those times when you prefer private listening.
Terrapin Technology
The 851E is designed as a truly high-end component throughout, with Terrapin impedance buffering modules to separate amplifier and signal impedance, delivering an even consistent sound across different sources. Nicknamed the Terrapins (because of their 10 pins) these modules add yet another dimension to Cambridge Audio's commitment to audio excellence.
Specifically, the Terrapin technology offers lower noise and distortion with excellent channel separation. This obviously gives the most natural sound quality possible, coming from a 'black' background due to low noise and with excellent soundstaging due to the isolated left and right channels.
When designing a stereo system, listeners are often encouraged to think about system matching, where components are handpicked to provide the best overall sound quality. People often assume this is due to the different audio characteristics, but frequently it is due to impedance (the relationship between voltage and current input/output) matching components.
Audiophile components perform at their optimum when their input and output impedances match, or the products' audio circuits are decoupled from other connected equipment. By using Terrapin impedance buffering modules, Cambridge Audio minimizes the effects of different components' impedances. This creates a system that can be paired with a far wider variety of audio sources, without risking any sacrifice in musicality or performance.
Even More Features
The 851E also offers flexible and controllable trigger outputs and control bus for integration with power amplifiers and an all-metal chassis, designed to isolate the electronics from unwanted external interference. The end result is the best true analog preamplifier Cambridge Audio has ever made.
An audiophile grade oversize toroidal transformer delivers power with extremely low distortion, enhancing the 851E's ultra-quiet operation.
The 851E is supplied with Cambridge Audio's new system remote, allowing you to control the 851-series amp, CD, DAC, and streamer, all from the same remote.
The Ultimate Pre and Power Combination
When Cambridge Audio developed its Azur 851 Series of hi-fi separates, the brief was simple: to make a hi-fi system that sounds better than anything else out there. With this in mind, the Azur 851E and 851W are Cambridge Audio's ultimate pre and power amplifier combination.
By separating pre and power amplifier functionality, Cambridge Audio engineers were able to give each component the time and dedication that it needs to deliver the ultimate performance. The 851E and 851W are designed to work in perfect synergy with each other, from the fully balanced XLR audio connectivity, to neat touches such as power syncing with each other.
