I was lucky enough to know Harry Pearson, and one time I visited him and saw and heard Rowland's first integrated amplifier and I got weak in the knees. Since that time I always wanted a Rowland — partly because they sounded so damn good, and partly because they are pieces of understated audio jewelry, reflecting the view that simple is better. (There is another very high-end manufacturer whose products today are like the McMansions of the audio world — more gold! more dials! more fonts! No thank you.)
The Capri is a great step into the Rowland world, incredibly neutral, dynamic, gorgeous. As some Mac users say, it's the operating system, stupid, and once you use a Rowland you'll understand that. Everything works exactly right: The buttons have a precise feel. The rotary dial increases volume slowly if you turn slowly and more rapidly if you turn quickly. (That sounds kinda stupid — like, duh — but it's not just the rate, it's also the acceleration.) The remote feels beefy but not ridiculous. There are balance controls, which too many manufacturers leave out nowadays. There are balanced and single-ended inputs and outputs.
This Capri comes with Rowland's superb phono section, offering gain sufficient for both MM and MC cartridges, at a user-selectable 40, 50, or 60 dB, and loading of 100, 400 and 47k ohms. As you might expect of all Rowland products, the phono stage is quiet as a tomb.
But wait! There's more! If you act now, I'll also toss in the power cord I used, a Custom Power Cord Company Model 11, which works great with this. It's a heavy beast, in very good condition.
I do not have the original box but the piece will be packed to avoid damage. Shipping is on you, at a flat fee of $25 for ground shipping in the US, or by actual cost by carrier of your choice (15 lbs. from 20814). My feedback is sterling because I try to treat others as I'd like to be treated. I have the same user name on eBay and fredmiranda.com, a photography site where I've bought and sold many items. If you're willing to pay by Friends and Family, you can deduct 2% of the price (and I'll save 1%). Otherwise, I'll eat the Paypal fee as the cost of doing business, but in that case I offer no discount to you.
A need to downsize forces this sale and a move to a one-box integrated amp. Otherwise I would be more than happy to keep it.
Questions? Fire away. This is truly a wonderful piece, in used but excellent condition, and I can't imagine anybody wouldn't be thrilled with it.
Incidentally, this is the lowest asking price for any Capri with phono ever offered (according to Hi-Fi Shark). Please do not write to ask for my "best price." I've already made an offer (it's the asking price), and I won't bid against myself. However, If you'd like to make a reasonable counter-offer, I'll be happy to consider it.
Includes a PDF print of the manual, remote (also in 8/10 condition), high-end power cable as described above.
