This is modified Sony PS-1 "Playstation" CD Player, SCHP-1001.
I modified and used it for a while in my audio system. Sony did a great job putting in excellent DAC in its early Playstation models. Modifications to this player yield excellent sonic results.
Model SCPH-1001 uses excellent Asahi Kasei AK4309AVM DAC which gives this player a superb audio quality with lots of detail, dynamics and resolution.
Mods:
Modified output stage - "dogbreath" mod - DAC direct output using WIMA capacitors and dale resistors.
Laser transport disassembled, cleaned, lubricated and damped.
Laser was adjusted, bias, gain, laser intensity set to specs - CDR's play with no problems.
Chassis is damped.
Stock feet replaced with polyurethane.
Vents are added in the case to help dissipate the heat from the power supply.
Added integrated remote control, so it functions like a full featured CD player, no need for "umbilical" controller.
I am not going to praise it to heavens (6 moons already did), suffice it to say that the sound of this player is on par with some of my "reference" CD players.
