Igor Stravinsky: "The Song Of The Nightingale" (Symphonic Poem), "Scherzo la Russe", "Fireworks", "Tango", Four Etudes for Orchestra, - The London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Antal Dorati
"That art cannot be mechanised, but demands freedom and belongs to all mankind is a lesson that had to be learned by the emperor of China in Hans Christian Andersenís fairytale. The emperor imprisoned a nightingale in a golden cage so that he alone could enjoy its song. An inventorís attempt to imitate the nightingaleís song by means of a mechanical bird brought the emperor only a shortlived pleasure: the cogwheels wore down, and the birdís music became a farce. But it was not only the birdsong which suffered. The emperor became ill and took to his bed. Only the song of the real nightingale can bring him back from deathís door.
Stravinsky set the fairytale to music in a symphonic poem which is filled with the colourful sounds of the Far East. Characteristic for the powerful musical language of this early work are reminiscences of stylistic elements from "The Rite Of Spring" and "The Firebird". The repertoire on this LP is enhanced by a sonorous Scherzo, the mock Tango, and the dramatic and far too rarely performed Etudes for Orchestra." - SCI

"If you can ignore the tape hiss these Mercury Living Presence recordings of Antal Dorati leading the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra would be among the finest ever made. Along with the tape hiss, Mercury's engineering captured every nuance of the performances with a clarity and lucidity that few later recordings could match." - AMG.

----- A TAS Recommended Recording -----
An absolutely stunning recording! Side 1 is Excellent and Side 2 is incredible. The instrumental intonations and timbre that are captured here are amazingly realistic. Dynamics, imaging and soundstage are all exceptional. The clarity, 'air' and 'presence' must be heard to be appreciated.
Some low-level tape noise/crackles are audible on extremely quiet passages but do not interfere.
