The unit is brand new and new revision with aluminum cast frame basket and logo stamp on rubber surround.
This subwoofer uses a patented servo feedback technology called direct-servo, meaning the sensor is just a sensing coil directly detects the cone velocity signal and then the servo signal goes back to the feedback network without any active device to ensure most pristine servo signal received by the power amplifier. This is contrasted with approaches from Velodyne and others which use piezo sensor. Piezo does not react to velocity directly. Instead it reacts to pressure. So there is a mechanical conversion process from velocity to pressure that can add coloration. And yet the signal coming out from piezo sensor is so weak that it needs opamps to amplify the signal before it can be used. The patented directservo technology addresses all these problems and the result is a very musical sound with articulation and clarity not heard at this price range.
In terms the advantage of servo vs nonservo, servo control provides extra control over the cone and therefore reduces the "boxy" sound. Our technology is very stable and scalable that we are the only company offering exclusively servo subwoofers, ranging from 12" to 15", sealed to ported, and entry level to more expensive models. That is, we don’t even sell nonservo subs. This model is our least expensive servo sub and a professional review and numerious customer reviews can be found on our web site.
Other customer reviews can also be found in searching for LV12R.
The amplifier is based on a 300WRMS Hypex Ucd module which is a well-known audiophile grade class-D module. The driver cone is made of light weight paper cone for excellent transient response. The 3-1/2" diameter port is located in the back with both ends flared (please allow 3-4" for clearance to the wall). It has true 20hz (-2db) extension This subwoofer represents the best value for entry level HT subwoofer: servo technology on a ported sub. To use it for music system, the mid extension and high extension settings both add damping control to tighten the bass sound while just sacrificing only a little in extension. One customer commented our LV12R is better than REL T1 which cost almost twice as much.
One customer also commented this sub compares favorably with SVS PB12-NSD. While NSD may sound just a bit louder, LV12R seems to go below 20hz and NSD really feel like stop at 20hz. This is because servo control allows us to design subsonic filter with gradual roll-off to provide just the right amount of protection. In nonservo subs, cone movement information is not utilized and therefore the designers often end up with roll-off that is just too sharp.
This model was introduced Feb, 2013. We have received quite a bit of positive reviews, further confirming the advantage of our technology. The size of the sub is bit on the large side: 16" wide, 19" deep and 22" tall. But large size enclosure improves efficiency tremendously.
Price is $599 including shipping to 48 continental states.
